Review of Japan's Pop Power

This piece was mainly appealing to me because I am a huge anime and manga fan. Yet, I think the producers did a good job at making this a piece that anyone could enjoy.

"Japan's Pop Power" offers a very thorough look into the booming impact of Japanese pop culture around the globe, specifically in America. This show goes beyond the typical what is anime and manga, and looks at the cultural aspect and the history of the movement. It's obvious that they put alot of time and effort in it by collecting interviews from around the USA and going to Japan.

The script was able to give the listener a good sense of setting, grounding the abstract of idea of a pop culture shift into the physical world. Likewise the interviews were well balanced between academics and the everyday fan/employee.

While the piece is a bit long, it seems that it could be seperated into segments, allowing it to appeal to a larger audience.

Review of Part 7: AP or Not AP?

This piece goes beyond looking at AP classes as a way to get a head in college. George also examines how race and grades also play into the increased number of AP classes being offered in school. A unique view, the story is strenghtened by audio bites from classes. This piece is appealing to students, parents, and teachers alike.

Review of (My)Space Invaders

As part of the MySpace generation this piece was easy to identify with. It is especially pertinent with the resent flairs over the safety of minors on MySpace as well. However, I think that going further in depth on the subject would enhance the story greatly. This piece could serve as a great intro onto the subject of MySpace and reality colliding.

Review of The Spoken Word: J.R. Moehringer (September 16-September 22) (deleted)

While book reviews may not be the some people's first idea for radio topic, J.R. Moehringer's book talk on his memoir was very engaging. His personality came through his voice amazingly well. In fact you could almost imagine how he looked by the texture of his voice. The entire time he spoke he maintained a serious, yet witty, dialouge with the audience. In fact, I now want to read his book.

Moehringer allows the listeners to feel the effect that the people in his life had on him. How large of a part his mother and the men at the bar played in raising him. Through this radio story we are able to see both his past and present, and are able to glimpse the possibilities that his future holds.

Review of Confessions of Teen Stripper

Edgy. Scarry. I'm a year older than when she began to strip, so this really brought this piece home. The whole topic and view point is so rarely heard that I was completely caught up in the piece. While the audio editing was a little harsh, I think it worked over all. Her voice seemed a little monotoned but once again it worked for the piece because you simply had to take in all the fact. The only thing that didn't flow right was the ending, it seemed to just stop, like she had more to say. Also I'm interested in how she got out of stripping.

Review of Bi Chic

Very interesting, very controversal. I liked the structure and the information presented in this piece. Luz grabbed and kept me interested the whole ten minutes with well choosen quotes and a well writen script. The football player segement was especially funny and I found Emma (the last interview) very insightful and diplomatic. The only thing that seemed to be missing was the views of straight girls, to see what they thought of about it.

Review of "The Thing About Being A Teenage Mother...Is That I'm Young"

As a teen and having seen girls at my high school pregnant I was very interested in this article. The quotes used were great, very sincere, very informative. The structure of this piece kind of threw me off, not having any narrative. While in the end just having the quotes worked, I think having a narrative structure and some background information on teen pregnancy and/or the girls you interviewed would have kick it up a notch. On the whole, I liked the piece and thought the choice of music was great.

Review of Axiom:Poetry.com scam (deleted)

This piece immediately caught my eye just by its name: Poetry.com Scam. I was interested because in middle school I was one of those "lucky people" that could buy their book with my poem in it and of course I bought it. Yet, while the topic was interesting, Harman's voice didn't fit with the piece, it sounded like he had a cold. Also I was a little worried about your source. What were the credential's of the website you quoted? However, I liked the plan to submit a bogus poem and to see if it gets printed. I want to know what happens!

Review of Maria: They Say Send Them Back

Often I hear about the controversy over illegal immigrants, but this was a fresh way to present the issue. It was very moving and quite an eye opener. I enjoyed hearing Maria's story and thought the flowy of the piece was quite good. The only thing that need a little work was the levels, I think Maria peaked a couple times.

Review of A Survivor of Cutting Speaks Out

This piece deffinitely reached out to the audience's emotions. However, I found the beginning a little confusing, I couldn't figure out if the piece was supposed to be a diary format or an actual newspiece. I think it might have helped to have a little background information. Other than that, I liked it and I liked the background music.
