How many squirrels are there in Central Park? It’s not just a trivia question for a dinner party. The answer tells us a lot about the urban environment. And one organization is getting citizen volunteers to figure it out. Rebekah Robinson reports.
The group known as the Squirrel Census has encouraged average park goers to slow down and take in their surroundings while counting squirrels. The data collected is more than just the number of squirrels in the park. Data collectors have also recorded park conditions and stories from their experiences counting the squirrels. The conditions can help us understand more about our urban environment.
