Zeitfunk 2010 Awards Ceremony

Welcome to our virtual Zeitfunk Awards Ceremony! Below you'll find photos and "acceptance speeches" from PRX members all over the country who won first-place in our Zeitfunk Awards for 2010.

Zeit-what? It's like a zeitgeist, only funkier: Each year we release a list of the most licensed and listened-to pieces, producers and stations of the previous calendar year. And, it's a great way to see what's selling who's buying it on PRX.

Were you a first-place winner who didn't submit your photo or acceptance speech? Don't be left out — send them along!

Most Listened-to Piece: Moon Graffiti

"Thank you, PRX for this handsome trophy, and the honor of being the most listened-to piece of 2010!

"Our story Moon Graffiti is part of a new fiction project we are developing with APM. We're still in our infancy and trying to raise support so that we can create new pieces, and this award is a very encouraging sign as we begin to grow. We believe there's an audience on public radio for more fictional storytelling, and PRX has given us the opportunity to prove that this is indeed true.

"This piece could not have happened without the hard work of many people. I'd like to thank Peter Clowney at APM for having faith in our concept, and for giving us all kinds of brilliant advice along the way. I'd also like to thank Hillary Frank, my editor on this piece, who had the wisdom and foresight to recognize that this was a story worth pursuing. Thanks also to Matt Evans, Ed Herbstman, and John Ottavino for being such talented actors, and making us believe in the tragic premise of this story. And a big thank you to Kerrie Hillman, my partner at The Truth, who is playing an invaluable role in helping to create a place for new original fiction on public radio. We look forward to bringing you many more stories in the years to come!

"Thank you, and long live PRX!" -Jonathan Mitchell, producer of The Truth

Most Licensed Piece:
Best of the Best: The 2010 Third Coast Festival Broadcast

"The Third Coast Sailing Team would like to thank PRX for this coveted award. Gathering great audio, by sea, by land blimp, camel or cattle prod, is a joy when you have the support and encouragement from an organization like PRX. Today, FM, tomorrow, the world cup!

"P.S. Thanks even more for the tall ship that you had sailed over to Navy Pier for us. It's a dime. We especially like the chandelier in the bathroom. We've moved our offices into it since the acoustics are so great." -Johanna Zorn, Executive Director of the Third Coast International Audio Festival

Most Active Commenter: Jim Reiss

"For the past four years commenting for PRX has become a habit. I've become addicted to the best indie public radio productions this side of Alpha Centauri. Although 3,487,639 visitors have recently seen my display case and have offered trillions of Chinese yuan for my four Zeitfunk trophies, I will hold onto them until the sun and Alpha Centauri go off the air." -Jim Reiss

Most Licensed Debut Producer: Stephen R. Webb

"First off, thanks for the 2010 Zeitfunk Award for most licensed rookie (or something like that). In particular I'd like to thank Aaron Read and Greg Cotterill at Finger Lakes Public Radio for their support and advice (and a kick in the pants) on how to transition Stuck in the Psychedelic Era from a locally aired show to a nationally syndicated one. I also want to thank Michael Black and the folks at WXXI (Rochester, NY) for help with the actual distribution process (not the least of which was pointing me in the direction of PRX).

"Really, though, this award should go to the hundreds of musicians that created the music played on Stuck in the Psychedelic Era. Unlike many of today's pop stars, these were by and large people who were more concerned with leaving a mark than making a buck. The fact that a good number of them did go on to make quite a few bucks only shows that sometimes there is indeed justice in the world. As often as not, though, they were mistreated by the music industry and faded off into obscurity, permanently branded as 'one-hit wonders'.

"All I'm doing is trying to keep their legacy alive." -Stephen R. Webb, Stuck in the Psychedelic Era

Most Licensed Debut Group: Loyola Productions

"We don't deserve this award!

"Then again, several of us have hangovers this morning, from celebrating too hard — and we don't deserve those, either. So we'll proudly showcase our Zeitfunk statuette ('the Zeity'?) in our already-crowded Stairwell of Many Trophies!

"A big shout-out to Public Radio Exchange for this very cool recognition, and extra thanks to those members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who thought they were voting for 'The Black Swan'.

"Beyond restoring the classic sounds of Mike Whorf’s 'Kaleidoscope' program to the airwaves, LPI creates mainstream films and TV series that grapple with issues of cultural, economic, political and religious diversity, always focusing on the most compelling human stories, and our award-winning documentaries, promotional films and instructional videos reflect the Jesuit commitment to education and social justice. Most Licensed Producer: Phil Nusbaum

"You know how it can be. You jump in the car to drive to the SA to get a loaf of bread, but overnight the city declared a construction zone. You finally make it to the store, but when you try to pay with a credit card, you learn the store has only dialup, so the transaction takes about 5 minutes. But we are adults. We accept that in an imperfect world, we must accept imperfection or go insane.

"Today I received a thank you from a college for which I have worked for the past 7 years. It was a $5 coupon that could be used only in the college’s café. So I ordered a turkey burger and fries, and as a result I only had to pay 36 cents. Best wisdom is to remember that attitude is everything. So I imagined how nice the gift must be after 14 years, and moved on. One learns to accept. And I accept this nice 2010 bowling trophy for the 2010 Zeitfunk award. It’s about time I took a stab at rolling a 300 game." -Phil Nusbaum, The Bluegrass Review

Most Playlisted Piece:
The Last Year in the Life of The Beatles

"Most playlisted piece...hmmm. Not even sure what that means or how it might deserve a trophy but as in years past, I'm flattered that visitors to PRX are spending some time with my music documentaries. They're all collected at these two links if you want to look and listen more (see, I'm campaigning to win in 2011 too! I'm such a trophy hound).

"PRX is totally a wonderful thing. I salute the other winners, all the other participants of all types. Let's see how far we can take this thing to get more and more people connected with more and more good radio — in a way that the independent producers can actually make a living at creating the good stuff. I also thank Melissa and my family and friends for cheering me on all the time to keep doing what I love to do." -Paul Ingles

Editor's note: The most playlisted piece essentially means that the piece was a favorite of people on PRX. Listeners, producers, and stations can create playlists to keep track of their favorite pieces so they can share them and listen to them again later. Learn how to make your own playlist!
