I love this piece, partly because it's so short. I hear a lot of radio pieces that are very wordy, which is fine, but an occasional short musical break like this allows time to process everything.
Very relevant information, especially with what I've been reading about how elephants are abused for tourists, and in circuses. Great storytelling by Susan!
You can tell that this is true by the way David Louis delivers the information. something about his style of delivery is so refreshing and unpretentious. The fact that he says this is high on the "woo-woo" scale cracked me up, and the story was moving and very real.
I'd love to hear more of this material, even if I'm not 100% convinced. It's a great subject to think about, and one not often spoken of.
I happen to love the way David Louis relates his stories. You can tell his sincerity is 100%, and the subject matter is fascinating to me, as a lover of animals. This is great addition to this series. A great ending too, to go right into a piece of music!
This piece made me think about insects in a whole new light. I think the story of humility and empathy, and how the image of the praying mantis is the oldest symbol of God are things that would not be heard elsewhere. I'd love to hear more from this program (For Kindred Spirits), and hope it can be made into a series! Top notch radio all around.
I'll say it again...I love the way David Louis tells his stories. So refreshing and real...and very moving too!
One of the best series I've heard in a long time.
Someone suggested that as an animal lover, I listen this show. It is amazing, both in terms of content and production. The transitions are masterful, and the show takes music bridges to an astounding new level. This program made me chuckle and made me cry. I hope stations will offer this show to their listeners. There is a huge market for a series like this, without question. A remarkable concept, an important subject, and a creative and powerful use of radio.
As I am listening to audio about elephants, I have heard a few elephant-related pieces lately. This one is refreshingly real and engaging, and full of relevant information. This is not a script being read, but stories from the heart, from people who really care. It all comes across. The story that Susan Chernak McElroy tells after we hear from Carol Buckley is told so well, and carries a great deal of emotion. A great combination of stories and voices, including the music that wraps up this piece so well. Top notch.
I found this piece to be extremely generic, taking on a timely and complex topic in a predictable and uninspired way. It was obvious that the speaker was reading as script, and the depth of insight the script offers is ...not deep. At least the audio quality was good, if not the content.
This piece struck me in its simplicity, and I could relate very much to the storyteller. I like the fact that it wasn't embellished with sound effects. Very simple and moving.
