Review of Journey

This journey that Geraldine depicts as a Navajo woman blending with more mainstream society is quite intriguing. I love her respect for her heritage and this beautiful way in which that is conveyed to us, the listening public.

Review of Grand Canyon Gold

Oh such a soothing piece of work all around. The entire sound of the song with story was just beautiful to the ears. Alger's gentle voice telling us about the simpler things in life while hearing his passionate and tender song in the background goes straight to the heart.

Review of Bells of Ireland

I thought this was a lovely oral history and a true gift from Rosalie to her family. The song tells an intimate story about family and to hear Rosalie reflect on the song as it played was quite moving and tender. A beautiful piece...

Review of Songs of the Humpback Chubb

What a delightful song and thought provoking story. I am thankful that Western Folklife Center was able to bring this song to the public. I don't know where else I would have heard the tale of the Humpback Chubb and I believe they have an important story to tell. Whether one is for or against the Grand Canyon Dam, it is certainly important for us all to understand that our interactions with nature affect many areas of life.

Review of Casey Jones

I enjoyed this piece so much more than I expected to. I grew up hearing songs about Casey Jones in the classroom, on cartoons, and on the radio. But to hear this well thought out story about Casey's life and legend was just incredible. I appreciate the wealth of information presented in this piece, and I was especially moved by one of Hal's last remarks. I certainly cannot imagine Michael Jordan or Oprah living forever in a folk song...

Review of Don't Laugh at Me

It is great to hear the story of the movement started by "Don't Laugh at Me" from the songwriter's own words. No one could really have a better prespective on the topic and it was quite enjoyable.

Review of Mariachi Corner

I never thought about Mariachi as a part of the "music business". The word business seemed the last word I would use to describe this style of music. I have lived in Arizona most of my life and have spent a significant amount of time in Mexico, yet until this piece, I had not considered how Mariachi musicians made their living or booked performances. Hal's interview was a truly informative piece that opened my eyes to a life I have always known existed, but never really contemplated.

Review of Finding Love in a Nevada Brothel

What a thought provoking article about such a taboo topic. As a society our general vision of prostitutes and the men who enjoy them is much more cruel than the picture Hal Cannon depicts for us in this interview. His delicate conversations with Mom, Cherry, and Copperfield really humanize brothels and their customers. I am still a little sad about the notion of women selling their bodies, but after reading about Cherry's peace with her career, Mom's tender way, and Copperfield's genuine love, legalized prostitution seems that much more bearable.
