Thirteen one-hour episodes, hosted by John Penney, exploring Detroit's contributions to the world of jazz.

Just about any jazz “expert” will tell you that it’s almost harder to find a classic jazz recording that doesn’t include someone from Detroit, Michigan, than vice versa. In “Jazz City,” a 13-part radio series from WRCJ-FM in Detroit, host John Penney delves into classic jazz recordings with stories about the people who made them and why so many players came from The Motor City.
Maybe it was the excellence of the public schools in the 1940s and 1950s which placed an emphasis on music education and produced such masters as Barry Harris, Gerald Wilson, Tommy Flanagan and so many others who, like Marcus Belgrave, became revered mentors to the next generation. Along the paths in “Jazz City” you’ll meet remarkable women like Dorothy Ashby, Geri Allen and Regina Carter, along with three amazing brothers: Hank, Thad, and Elvin Jones. You’ll also meet some of today’s rising stars contributing new voices on the jazz scene.
“Jazz City” is not just about musicians from Detroit – Ron Carter, Milt Jackson, Yusef Lateff, Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, and many others – it’s also about their influence on folks like Miles Davis, Count Basie, John Coltrane and jazz fans around the world.
Jump in. Let’s take a spin through “Jazz City.”
