Blues America

Series produced by Drew Verbis

Series image

"Blues America" is “where the blues talks”; a weekly radio series that provides an outlet for Blues artists to share their stories. Each program includes a guest interview, special features and four full-length songs packed into a 58:00-minute format that is delivered to PRX and Audioport every Friday before noon.

Blues America has a large national audience and is independently produced by award winning host Drew Verbis at the Chico Chism Memorial Studio in Phoenix (Chico Chism was the Howlin’ Wolf’s last drummer). The former Mississippi resident was the manager for Blues legend Louisiana Red and has worked behind the scenes in support of the Blues for 20 years; much of which with his mentor and friend, Bob Corritore. The series is one of the featured “stations” in the Living Blues Magazine radio charts and is endorsed by the Blues Foundation and the Recording Academy. Past guests have included the greatest players of the genre like B.B. King, Bobby Rush, Shemekia Copeland, Ruth Brown, Eric Bibb, Lil Ed Williams, Joe Louis Walker, Janiva Magness, Curtis Salgado and many more.

“This show is very special and Drew is an exceptional young man. He doesn’t spin records for an hour like my uncle did 60 years ago; no, this is blues entertainment. And because of this, I think he’s found a way to make roots music approachable to everyone. That’s not easy.” – Jerry Lawson, The Persuasions

For Verbis, it's not twiddling the radio knobs or playing the records, although that is part of it, it's the expert knowing, the passion, the loving of Blues music that is his job." -Michael Clawson, Staff Writer, West Valley View

“Drew is allowing the Blues to tell its story and nobody is doing this anymore. We can’t forget our traditions, stories and history. There are not many outlets for artists to talk about the Blues so I hope the community supports this special program that is keeping the Blues Alive." -Bobby Rush

“Blues America is an exceptional program that fulfills a badly needed niche bringing to light the personal narrative of many vital artists in today’s contemporary Blues world.” – Bob Corritore

“Young guys like Drew [Verbis] and myself are sparking the fire in other young people to step out and make this music great again” – Mr. Sipp
