Margaret Roach, the former garden editor of Newsday newspaper on Long Island, and the first garden editor of Martha Stewart Living, where her writing reached millions of readers each issue. She went on to become EVP/Editorial Director of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, overseeing its internet, book, and magazine content. For four years she co-hosted the popular Homegrown live call-in garden program on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Martha Stewart channel. She walked away from “success” in 2008 to live a simpler life closer to nature, and began to publish AWayToGarden.com, which was called “the best garden blog” by Anne Raver of The New York Times. Though Roach gardens in USDA Zone 5B, the 100,000-plus visits to her website each month originate from around the country, and world.
Her garden on the Hudson Valley NY/Berkshires MA border has been open several times a season for more than 15 years as part of the national Garden Conservancy Open Days program. Roach has lectured on gardening for more than 20 years nationwide. She is the author of A Way to Garden, named the best garden book of 1998 by the Garden Writers of America; And I Shall Have Some Peace There, her dropout memoir published 2011; and The Backyard Parables: Lessons on Gardening, and Life, published in January 2013 and praised by People magazine, The New York Times and more.
