Joaquin Miller (1837 - 1913) had many adventures with bears when he lived in California and Oregon. In those days bears were plentiful as were mountain lions and bobcats.
You could never plan on when you'd run into a bear or what would happen when you did. Best advice from trappers and Indians alike was to run downhill. Bears don't run downhill very well at all.
