The Rail Enthusiasts

From Angus Mackay | 32:09

A Locomotive Enthusiast, a Train Spotter and a Rail Modeller discuss their hobby.

Default-piece-image-0

Rail Enthusiasm is a popular and diverse hobby in many countries around the world. Train spotting, rail modelling, timetable enthusiasm and collecting rail memorabilia are just some elements of the hobby.

It’s not unusual for people to look down upon Rail Enthusiasm but, at its core, is it really so different from other pastimes such as outdoor pursuits or watching sport? We spoke with some Rail Enthusiasts to get an insider’s view.

The interviewees are:

Rick Goodell, Locomotive Enthusiast https://www.facebook.com/NErailfan

Barry Jones, Train Spotter and author of ST Publications (http://www.stpublications.co.uk/)

Colin Rae, Model Enthusiast and Model Painter of R3Sprays (https://sites.google.com/site/r3sprays/)

We’ve all played the occasional board game or card game. But there are other games that players can fully inhabit, make up their own rules for and generally let their imaginations take flight.

Table-top war games and role playing games require players to collectively inhabit other times and places in the form of alter egos such as Space Elves, Vampires, Sorcerers or members of Starfleet Command. At first this can seem a little unusual but it is arguably just an exaggerated form of something we all do – inhabit a slightly different persona according to whether we are with a partner, family, friends or colleagues. This kind of gaming can also provide a degree of escape from the more mundane aspects of day to day life.

We spoke with Kenny Burns, owner of Static Games and A1 Comics, and Tom Rolland who is a Table-Top War Gamer and member of G3 (Glasgow Games Group) to learn more about Gaming.

Many thanks to Kenny and Tom for giving their time and to the G3.

The Egyptian Roller Derby Players

From Angus Mackay | 41:06

No-Fear-Teti of Egypt's Cairollers discusses Women's Roller Derby in post-revolutionary Egypt.

Default-piece-image-2

This is a woman’s world! And it’s wild, theatrical, tough and, perhaps, a wee bit tongue-in-cheek. Only the strong survive. Women with the world’s best stage names go head-to-head around the oval for the fun of it, for their team mates and for glory.

So far, so standard an introduction to women’s Roller Derby.

But what about all of the above played out during an on-going national revolution whilst re-shaping your identity, whether it’s the one you are making for yourself or the one made for you?

We spoke to No-Fear-Teti of Egypt’s Cairollers to hear about how Roller Derby is breaking new ground away from its North American homeland and other established areas such as Europe.

We would like to thank the following for their help: Jess E Ska, Grace Maclean and Fiona Ferguson (Glasgow Roller Derby), Black Dahlia and Little Misfit (Valencia Roller Derby).

Special thanks to No-Fear-Teti.
