Religious devotion and carnival revelry combined Friday night as thousands of devout Catholics gathered in the small Guatemalan village of San Bartolome Bacerra for a Lenten celebration.
For the thousands of Catholics gathered in San Bartolome Bacerra, the "Volacion of Jesus," adoration of Jesus, was both a solemn religious momement and an excuse for a racous party.
The events in San Bartolome were but a precursor for a massive 12-16 hour long procession in the nearby town of La Antigua, Guatemala, the following Sunday.
