St. Thomas is one of the three islands Denmark sold to the United States during the First World War amid fears of a German invasion. Today, students at the Moravian School present a program commemorating the Transfer Day centennial (March 31, 2017). It's called Under Eight Flags: From Subjects to Citizens. But the subject of citizenship in the US Virgin Islands is a difficult one to understand. Educator and historian Gerard Emanuel gives a talk on status and citizenship before and after the transfer and explains why there is still reason for Virgin Islanders to celebrate and be hopeful. 5 minutes.
