One of the oldest American musical traditions comes from the Appalachian Mountains. It's played with fiddles and banjoes, and it's alive today because people have passed it along - on front porches, in general stores, in dance halls. The music is full of old stories, and two young women from Virginia are bringing the stories' songs to life with hand-made scrolls called "crankies."
Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle illustrate their music with these devices, and their performances are all about telling the vivid stories behind the traditional tunes they play. Formally known as Anna and Elizabeth, the duo is based in rural Virginia and tours across the country playing songs on guitar and banjo, and showing their crankies. This is their story, in their own words.
