Funeral for a sound

Radio feature on Irish fog signals

Ballycotton-light-house_small In January 2011 Irelands coastline became a quiter place. Thanks to the development and advances in Satellite technologies a decision was made to close the last nine remaining fog signals of Ireland. In conjunction with lighthouses these sonic symbols of safety and home have for ever fallen silent. Growing up as I did in costal Co. Cork, just on the western approaches to the harbour the fog horn at Roches pt. was as much a part of the place as the sky and beach. The fog horn sounded year round in conditions of low visibility and was a constant reminder to us on land that we were home and to those fishing on the small craft it acted to reassure that land was not far no matter how dark the night.

I'm now living in the UK but I returned in January with my recorder to speak to some people living in earshot of Roches Pt. to get their reaction and recount some memories of the sound.
