Uneasy coexistence between soccer players, Overtown residents

From Lisett Araujo | 15:20

Although soccer is a way of life for many in Miami, South Florida lacks fields that cater to adults. Brothers Randy and Pablo Rendón came up with a solution. They purchased an empty lot in Overtown and transformed it into a soccer enthusiast’s dream. However, local residents aren’t as thrilled about the field as the players are.

Brothers Randy and Pablo Rendón saw a business opportunity on the southside of Overtown, a few blocks from downtown and the Miami River. They purchased an abandoned lot across from a low-income housing project and turned it into two fields where adult soccer enthusiasts representing every country in Latin America and every walk of life – from waiters to executives – could come and play.

For $120, players get the field for an hour and play six-on-six games on artificial turf at Downtown Soccer Miami. Many park their luxury cars along the street and stay after the games to socialize over beer and grilled meat. Co-owner Pablo says his business has made a positive impact on the community. They’ve cleaned up the lot, lit up the neighborhood and deterred crime. But some area residents don’t see it that way.
