Ryley McGinnis was shy and hadn't thought much about performance poetry when she entered Mackensie Malkemes' English class at Carrboro High School, but a year later, Ryley is writing and reading her poetry out loud whenever she has the chance. Ryley shows Ms. Malkemes how far she's come by reciting her latest spoken-word poem.

Cameron McNeill is a senior at Riverside High School in Durham, where Steven Unruhe teaches math and advises students who write for the school paper. Cameron and his three siblings have all taken calculus with Mr. Unruhe and they have all been managing editors for the newspaper in the last 14 years. Cameron will be the last of the McNeill children to leave Mr. Unruhe's class. He talked with his teacher about what it's like to live up to his siblings' legacies and the end of his family's time at Riverside.

Northern High School sophomore Christina Dixon entered Erica Walker-Joynes' exceptional children's class last year because she was deemed to be at risk for dropping out when she got to high school. But Christina found her niche in slam poetry club, and with Ms. Walker Joynes, who she says played a big part in keeping her in school.
