One Last Word: Signs
From Mark Blackmon | Part of the One Last Word series | 04:56
Signs. They’re everywhere, but do we ever stop to examine them? Probably not, unless there’s something about them that one finds funny. Or weird. Or just plain wrong. Commentator Mark Blackmon found just such a sign recently for his local Oktoberfest.

Commentator Mark Blackmon found just such a sign recently for his local Oktoberfest that he thought was funny and weird and wrong. His original intent was a piece poking fun at it — only to discover while writing it that he was the one who was “just plain wrong.”

News. Where do you get your news? More importantly, who do you trust to deliver that news? Well, according to the Gallup organization's annual Confidence in Institutions survey, no more than 25 percent of Americans say they have "a great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in newspapers and television news. Where does that leave us? Commentator Mark Blackmon says he's given up newspapers and TV news for comedy programming. He says it just seems saner.
One Last Word: Rural
From Mark Blackmon | Part of the One Last Word series | 05:14

One Last Word — Tomatoes
From Mark Blackmon | Part of the One Last Word series | 03:25
There's a dish of small tomatoes sitting in my refrigerator this afternoon. I think they are the last ones I'm going to get this year.
I don't like this time of year much. This "not-quite-still-summer-but-not-yet-autumn," says commentator Mark Blackmon, who waxes a bit melancholic over what may be his last home-grown tomatoes of the year as summer drains away.
