Actress Tanna Frederick discusses working for indie director Henry Jaglom on stage and screen

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-Movie Stars series | 29:13

In recent years, Tanna Frederick has become the star of writer/director Henry Jaglom's company of actors, which operates much like his hero Orson Welles' Mercury Theater.

Tannafrederick_small If you’re a woman in search of someone else’s emotional train wreck to make you feel better about your own life, film director Henry Jaglom has got a movie or two for you.

Maybe it’s his latest, Irene in Time, about a young singer with severe daddy abandonment issues. Or maybe you’d like his previous film, 2008’s Hollywood Dreams, about a would-be actress who oozes charisma but gets so nervous in every social situation she makes you nervous.

Tanna Frederick is the common thread between these films. She’s the star of both, a big presence on screen. It could be that huge mane of cascading red hair, but I think it’s actually the emotions that pour out from her.

The story of how she got to this point is pure Hollywood and I hope to entice her to tell it, but suffice to say that Jaglom already has plans for her to star in a sequel to Hollywood Dreams. And she’s currently appearing live in a Jaglom play, “Just 45 Minutes from Broadway,” at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica, California.

Warehouse 13 actor Saul Rubinek

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-TV stars series | 14:31

Star of the SyFy cable network series "Warehouse 13" talks about season two.

Warehouse_13_small A year ago, I invited actor Saul Rubinek to be a guest on this show, not because he was one of the leads on a new SyFy network show called “Warehouse 13”—who knew what the hell that would be about?—but because he was Saul Rubinek, actor and writer.

This year, make no mistake, I want to talk to him about Warehouse 13.

Last year, Warehouse 13 was the show SyFy pinned its hopes and aspirations upon as it changed the spelling of its network name from the familiar S-C-I-F-I to the bizarre and off-putting S-Y-F-Y.

Funny how nobody’s talking about the network’s spelling anymore, just about its remarkable shows, Warehouse 13, which returns for its second season on Tuesday, July 6 at 9 pm., and Eureka, which rejoins the action on Friday, July 9 at 9 p.m.

Even cooler, the two shows will crossover later this season. What could be cooler that that? Only if both shows crossed over with another NBC Universal genre property when it returns in the fall: Chuck.

Baby boomer marketing expert Roger Chiocchi interviewed

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-Nonfiction Authors series | 28:54

Roger Chiocchi is a Connecticut based marketing executive and author of 'Baby Boomer Bust?'

Babyboomerbust_small The post-war baby boom is becoming something else, more than half a century later.

But is that something else a bust?

In his new book, Baby Boomer Bust?—and the title ends in a question mark—Roger Chiocchi (KEY-O-Key) says it may be a problem that the average baby boomer nearing retirement only has $68,000 in a 401k. And no, if you’re looking at the totality of retirement, and not just the first year, that is not much.

How has the recession impacted boomers? What are they spending money on right now, which messages resonate most with them, and what do they want from businesses today?

Apparently “deeper senior discounts at Denny’s” is not the correct answer.

Eddie McClintock interview, star, Warehouse 13, SyFy Channel

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-TV stars series | 10:51

The second season of Warehouse 13 premieres Tuesday, July 6 @ 9 p.m. In this interview, McClintock discusses social media's help in pushing the show's popularity.

Eddiemcclintock_small Eddie McClintock was one of those guys who showed up on a lot of TV shows over the years without finding a permanent place to nest and spread his wings—that is, until SyFy chose him to star opposite Joanne Kelly in its signature series, Warehouse 13.

The show debuted last summer to high expectations and it quickly delivered, giving the channel’s new spelling of its name a boost and launching a growing fan base for Warehouse 13’s leads, McClintock and Kelly.

Tonight, Warehouse 13 returns at 9 p.m. for the opening salvo of its second season on SyFy.

But enough about the show. Let’s talk about Eddie McClintock, professional tweeter or twittererererr… This is a man who appreciates the turn his life has taken and isn’t afraid to blurt it out.

To wit:

“Just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who has helped make #WAREHOUSE13  a dream come true for me. now...LET'S KICK SOME ASS!! –Eddie” 8 AM Jul 6th

This is also where we can learn what song Eddie is whistling—yesterday, it was “Killer Queen”—or that the cast and crew saw the season two premiere in a real theater, which made us all envious!

Robert K. Elder interview, author, Last Words of the Executed

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-Nonfiction Authors series | 28:53

Elder collected the final words of American serial killers, psychopaths and more. The book has an introduction by the late journalist Studs Terkel.

Lastwordoftheexecuted-cover_small I don’t know that the world was bouncing on its heels, waiting impatiently for someone to finally collect the last words of men and women subject to the death penalty in the United States, but now that we have it, Robert K. Elder’s Last Words of the Executed makes for a fascinating read.

But don’t take my word for it.

The late, great writer Studs Terkel, author of one of my favorite journalistic books, Working—I read and carried it with me everywhere during my senior year of college—wrote the first words for Last Words of the Executed shortly before passing away. Here’s what he said about it, in part:

“Elder is a journalist in the noblest tradition, getting at a certain truth. And the truth may come from the most ejected members of our society, the most reprehensible, and yet the humanity is still there… Perhaps there will come a time whena book such as this will no longer be needed but will be remembered as a history of a prehistoric time. It’s all moving stuff.”

Terkel went on to say that he found the book to be poetry of a sort.

As for Elder, he is a journalist and a teacher at Northwestern University. This is second trip to Mr Media Radio; he was here before talking about his websites, WhenItWasOver.com and ItWasLoveWhen.com.

Patricia Richardson interview, actress, The Jensen Project, Home Improvement

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-TV stars series | 08:07

Actress Patricia Richardson discusses life with Tim on "Home Improvement" and now on "The Jensen Project"

Patriciarichardson_small Guys, see if you know where I’m going with this.

There’s a point in the male maturation process where you think “Moms are old. Who would be attracted to somebody’s Mom?”

One day, you become a dad and suddenly there is nothing hotter than somebody else’s Mom.

Which brings us to Jill Taylor, the long suffering, beleaguered TV wife of Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor on ABC’s long-running sitcom, “Home Improvement.” How could you not find her sexy? She was funny, flirtatious, handled any crap thrown at her and was forever playing hard to get.

Anyway, Patricia Richardson, who played Jill—and earned four Emmy nominations for her work—joins us today to talk about her the latest assignment, “The Jensen Project,” airing tonight (July 16, 2010) on NBC at 8 p.m.

Actor Christopher Gorham leaves Ugly Betty for Covert Affairs

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-TV stars series | 12:38

An interview with the popular actor now on USA's "Covert Affairs" and who previously played "Henry" on ABC's "Ugly Betty"

Covertaffairs1_small The last time Christopher Gorham was on Mr. Media, he and a lot of other people were dealing with the sudden cancellation of ABC’s “Ugly Betty.” Gorham made an indelible impression on that show as Betty’s frustrating as all get out boyfriend, Henry, who was always just beyond her reach.

 --------------

--------------

Gorham wasn’t yet sure if Henry would make a final appearance on Betty—he did—but what he really wanted to discuss was a new USA Network show he was shooting called “Covert Affairs.” This is a high-profile gig for Gorham, playing opposite Piper Perabo and Peter Gallagher; he plays Auggie Anderson, a CIA military intelligence agent who was blinded while on assignment. The show airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m.

And we’re going to talk about that today, but first I want to know the same thing that actress Alyssa Milano asked in her blog last week: what’s with the widely circulated picture of a shirtless Christopher Gorham getting his belt tugged by the hand of an otherwise out-of-sight female?

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Margaret McPoyle rips off the unibrow!

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-TV stars series | 26:34

An interview with British actress Thesy Surface of FX's hit sitcom, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"

Thesy_surface_as_margaret_mcpoyle_small Think about this for a minute. You’re a beautiful young actress, born in Chicago, raised in London and when you open your mouth, the most delightful, sophisticated accent comes pouring out.

You’re waiting for your big break in show business when the phone rings.

One of the buzziest hit sitcoms on TV, FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” is calling. They want you for what could become a recurring role on the raunchy, outrageous gross-out fest. Sounds like a dream come true.

But… the producers want to paste a dark, heavy unibrow across that lovely forehead of yours. And your hair? Tied into pigtails. At least you’ll get to utter some real clever, coarse dialogue, right?

Sorry, kid. Your character is mute. No words will be spoken. But you do get to make a rather salacious move with your tongue.

What do you say?

Thesy Surface said yes.

Yes to Margaret McPoyle, the silly stuff of which TV legends are made on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

For most people, this will be the first time you’ll have heard Thesy’s voice. Want to hear more? Check out her video blog at ThesySurface.com.

And, oh yeah: the show returns to FX for its sixth season on Thursday, September 16 @ 10 p.m. (You can also catch up on episodes you missed on Comedy Central.) Mono-browed Margaret McPoyle — played by Thesy Surface —returns around Halloween.

Actress Paula Garces is everywhere: Warehouse 13, Harold & Kumar movies and The mun2 Look

From Bob Andelman | Part of the Mr. Media Radio Interviews-TV stars series | 11:05

Actress Paula Garces can be found in high profile roles; she also starred on "The Shield"

Paulagarces_small Paula Garces is beautiful, smart and ambitious, which makes for a combustible mix is Hollywood.

She’s held her own on the critically acclaimed FX series “The Shield” and maintained both her mystery and dignity in both Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. She just finished shooting the third movie in the series, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (in 3D!) and is currently driving Pete crazy as a snappy, sexy veterinarian on the SyFy hit “Warehouse 13.”

So the natural next move is hosting a fashion show on the Spanish network The mun2, right?

“The mun2 Look” kicks off its second cycle on Saturday, August 21 at 4 p.m. But Paula is not just the host; she’s also the show’s executive producer and co-host.

This is Paula’s second visit to Mr. Media Radio; she previously joined me to talk about the second Harold & Kumar movie and her involvement in Alex Ferrari’s short film, Red Princess Blues Animated.

When I was first approached about the role on Warehouse 13, there was a possibility it might extend beyond two episodes. After they saw our energy together, the producers extended us to six episodes. And they left it open for me to come back next season. It's lots of fun."
