The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its 85th anniversary in 2004 with a unique program and with many of the conductors that have helped shape Rotterdam's formidable history.
Radio Netherlands Music also makes its return to Rotterdam with this exclusive six-part series of two-hour programs, hosted in English by Hans Haffmans, host of Live! at the Concertgebouw. The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra is one of Holland's most respected musical institutions and it has for many years been a part of Radio Netherlands Music's programming, including the orchestra's Amsterdam performances in the Live! at the Concertgebouw.
Returning to Rotterdam's Doelen concert hall, the orchestra's home, for Rotterdam Revisited lends intimacy to the concerts and captures what for many conductors will be a bittersweet homecoming. Conductors James Conlon, Ingo Metzmacher, Jeffery Tate, Edo de Waart, Wayne Marshall and current principal conductor Valery Gergiev will comprise Rotterdam Revisited.
More than simply conducting the orchestra, these conductors have selected that repertoire they wish to perform with the orchestra, a repertoire which is as varied as the conductors themselves: Zemlinsky, Brahms, Mahler, Berg, Hartmann, Bruckner, Strauss, Prokofiev, Gorb, and Gershwin.
