As baby boomers age, Alzheimer's disease could become the nation's greatest health care crisis. Is there an effective treatment on the horizon? Might the disease be prevented? Will we provide enough funding for Alzheimer's research, and to care for those stricken by the disease? We look for answers to those questions in this five-part series.

It's predicted to be the defining disease of the baby boom generation - Alzheimer’s - the incurable brain disorder that destroys memory and personality, as well as the ability to speak and function.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in eight Americans over the age of sixty-five already has the disease; over the age of eighty-five, nearly one in two. As seventy-eight million baby boomers continue to age, the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease may triple by 2050, and experts warn that without effective treatment, this explosion of cases could become the nation's greatest health care crisis.

During National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, 90.9 WBUR Boston is presenting a series of special reports: “Fade To Darkness: The Age Of Alzheimer’s.”

In this five-part series we meet Alzheimer's patients and their families, examine the latest research into treatment. diagnosis and prevention, and explore whether sufficient funding and planning are in place to provide care for the millions yet to be afflicted. Hide full description
