A 5 part series 8-9 minutes each highlighting advances in Breast Cancer detection and treatments

This series is designed to take the fear and excuses out of having a mammogram. It includes interviews with two cancer surgeons, a genetic counselor, several breast cancer survivors, an oncologist and others.

1)Mammography is seen as the most effective way to screen for breast cancer. This segment explores its improvements and how its ability to find cancers at very early stages has improved options for treatment and the chances of "living with" cancer. We listen in on part of an exam and discuss how long it takes, and affordability.

2) The field of genetics exploded with the completion of the human genome project in 2003. The discovery of two genes related to breast cancer has opened up options for many families and created a greater understanding of the relation between family history and health risks. This segment looks at recent developments, what is being worked on currently, and what the future may hold.

3)Early detection of breast cancers and genetic research has affected the field of oncology, aiding in the decision making process of what kind of chemotherapy should be given a patient or even if it needs to be given at all. In this segment we learn of recent improvements in anti-nausea drugs and a variety of treatments newly available.

4) Years ago breast cancer surgery was greatly disfiguring and often dibilitating. With new research and detection techniques, most breast cancer patients are now candidates for breast conserving and minimally invasive surgeries. Sentinal lymph node biopsies, and techniques such as onco-plastic surgery are discussed in this segment.

5) Patient services have improved in the last decade. Financial assistance for screening is available for the un-insured and those with high deductibles,as well as transportation and connections to related services. Medical centers get screening results to patients more quickly, and systems of guiding people through their care have improved with a concept called nurse navigation. Hide full description
