As I Lay Reading

From David Green | 02:50

What is librarian Emily's biggest fear? Not being able to finish all the books she is in the middle of.

Emily_reading_small Being afraid of dying is not so uncommon. Emily's reason for fearing death, though, might be. What about death scares her? Not being able to finish all the books she is in the middle of.

Every Time You Leave

From David Green | 03:08

Berlin, Germany - 1972. An American teenager tries to come to terms with what she sees and what she feels on both sides of the Wall while secretly meeting with East German youth unable to worship openly under Communist rule.

As a child and teenager, Kathy and her family spent many summers in Germany. Her father, a Presbyterian Minister, supported and helped clergy and congregations living under Communist rule. He also took youth groups from his suburban Chicago church along with him. The experience these American teenagers had was, to say the least, eye-opening, as they crossed back and forth between West Berlin and East Berlin and secretly met and held church services with East German youth.

Questions for Martin Luther King, Jr.

From David Green | 02:20

If given the chance to interview Dr. King, this is what a group of third graders would have asked him.

Mlk_small After learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. - and about how to be good radio reporters and interviewers -  a class of Chicago-area third graders (and one visiting student from South Korea) wrote down the most important questions they would have asked Dr. King if they could have interviewed him. The resulting audio collage captures the curiosity, empathy, wisdom and innocence of eight and nine-year old children.

As part of a two week, all-school (K-12) Poetry Festival at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, IL, Third Grade Audio produced our first “Short Lists” for one of the poetry assemblies. We continue to write and record new short lists each year.

We first learned about Short Lists from producer Jay Allison during his keynote speech at the 2007 Third Coast International Audio Festival Conference.

What is a Short List? “It's a list you create from your experience or research or daily life. You read it out loud for about 60 seconds and then tell us at the end what the list WAS." (transom.org)

Here at Third Grade Audio, we think of them as a combination of a list poem and a riddle. We wrote Short Lists of all kinds and then took some of our favorite topics written by individual third graders and created group Short Lists – writing, recording and producing them jointly. We played them for an audience of roughly five-hundred people during the Poetry Festival.

Each Spring, a new set of third graders adds to our Short List series.

Stuffed Animals 1

From David Green | 02:23

Third Graders tell stories about their favorite stuffed animals and dolls.

L_s_cats_small Did you have a special stuffed animal when you were little? A group of third graders recorded recollections and stories about their own stuffed animals and dolls and wove them into a series of audio collages. Names, descriptions, stories as well as testaments of love and indifference were captured. From the cherished to the forgotten, from the magical to the mundane, from the serious to the silly, take a peek into a small part of the world as experienced and recounted by eight and nine-year olds. In this first of three audio collages, third graders entertain each other with tales of stuffed animals, revealing the important place such dolls hold in the lives of children as objects of both love and distraction.
