About Me

Judith Sloan is an actor, oral historian and audio artist/radio producer, whose multi-character multi-media work combine humor, pathos and a love of the absurd. Performance and Radio works include: Denial of the Fittest, Responding to Chaos, and A Tattle Tale: eyewitness in Mississippi, and Crossing the BLVD. She recently won First Place in the Narrative Essay competition in the Missouri Review's Audio Competition for her personal essay Sweeping Statements in 2007/08 and the following year 2008/09 for her personal essay Dayenu; her piece What's Your Status won first runner up. In 2005 she was honored, along with Carl Hancock Rux, with the BAXten Artist Award as a performing artist, and was one of four producers commissioned to produce a new SHORT DOC by the 2005 Third Coast International Audio Festival. Her audio pieces include radio documentaries that have been produced for National Public Radio and New York Public Radio, audio sound pieces for exhibitions, and audio sound and music pieces for her collaborative award-winning multimedia project Crossing the BLVD: strangers, neighbors, aliens in a new America, created in collaboration with Warren Lehrer. Crossing the BLVD is part of a multimedia project that began with storytelling workshops in libraries, community centers and schools throughout Queens, and culminated in a 400 page book and audio CD (W.W. Norton) public radio documentaries, a traveling exhibition of photographs and sound stations, a performance, and an interactive website: htt://www.crossingtheblvd.org. The project documents and portrays the lives of new immigrants and refugees. Sloan's Crossing the BLVD audio pieces have aired on NPR's Day to Day, All Things Considered, The Wolrd, and The Next Big Thing and on many listener-sponsored stations. Her audio/story/essay Cargo Flight to Somewhere received a special merit award from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters in 2005. Sloan is a member of the faculty at the Gallatin School at NYU where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in documentary art, oral history, character acting, and community projects. She is also the director of Cross-Cultural Dialogue Through the Arts, an arts mentorship program creating collaborations between disparate communities, providing theatre training and language skills to underserved immigrant teenagers in workshops with college students and professional artists. She collaborates with hip hop artists on projects that transform trauma into. Sloan often collaborates with her husband Warren Lehrer with whom she co-founded EarSay, Inc a non-profit organization dedicated to documenting and portraying lives of the uncelebrated and fostering dialogue across cultures, religions, generations, class and gender.
