There's some great humor in this piece -- some of it subtle, some not so subtle. I am very interested in things that have impact on the Yankee dollar, our money. I know there is a great value in looking to history for lessons and I appreciate reports that bring history into consideration of what's happening today -- which this piece did outstanding well!
The errors in history and the deceit upon the people by a former president in this same kind of thing, by LBJ, should be very thought-provoking to every caring American.
And, I most especially appreciate the careful ear of the editors of this report to be catching the things that President Obama says straight out but then coaches those statements with words carefully crafted around them that sometimes can make us miss the real meaning. I believe in this report the editors and the host did a very good job of ferreting out those shocking phrases that the President made that to me reveals we are going to be in another grave mess financially and otherwise if the government is allowed to take over the health care insurance system.
That 1/3 tax the President mentioned that he will demand would surely become much more than that in the future and that our national deficit will not be increased by such a plan is something your report has helped me to see not to expect. The line of the President you isolated, ''That money one way or another is coming out of your pocket!'' Wow! Mr. Tax man!
Very good the way you brought in Senator Baner back and forth with Obama's speaking. That really showed that the Senator's prediction was correct and it showed that Obama will demand new taxes to keep the deficit from going higher because of his desires to take over the health-care insurance industry and keep things deficit neutral at the same time. I got it -- I heard it so well brought out in this exceptional report.
This report was VERY revealing! And, again, the humor in it was wonderful! (Love that cat that screeched when the President said the tax payers are already putting money for this into the kitty - ha! - but then he said there'd be a 1/3 tax increase -- and I believe that's only the part he's willing to admit to -- get him kitty!)
And what a candid speaker this program worked in by interviewing Pastor Manning, a black pastor from New York, someone from the Black community very willing to speak forthrightly.
I have to tell you that overall this program shocked me but the humor used throughout was quiet settling and made me able to handle the reality of mess we could be in in the future. Better to know ahead than to be shocked AFTER it happens. And, maybe this report could somehow help wake up even the President? Well, maybe it's not that good -- but good for those of us who believe in shouldering those burdens God has given each of us to bear -- and hopefully that's not too many more taxes! Get him kitty!
I listened last night and enjoyed some more great tunes that I had never heard before. Now, of course I was familiar with "Deep Purple" but didn't know that it was orginially recorded in 1938 by Bea Wain and the Larry Clinton Orchestra. I thought that this was a newer song. I remember hearing this song by Donnie and Marie Osmond and I've heard a version by Nino Tempo & April Stevens (another brother and sister team) -- but this orignial Bea Wain & Larry Clinton version is my quite good. I can see why it stayed number one in 1939 for nine consecutive weeks.
I can hardly wait to find what you'll be playing next week. This is my most favorite show ever!
I agree with Paul that this is a wonderful show! It's a most wonderful show. But it needs to not only be on the Internet but all local public stations should be carrying it before or after or in place of Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion. This show is the greatest!
This week's music from 1954 is some of the most beautiful music. Eddie Fisher's "Oh! My Papa" is very touching (I heard that he was married to Elizabeth Taylor at one time or was is Debbie Reynolds?) and that's a very dynamic rendition of "That's Amore" by Dean Martin -- and wow! this "Crossover The Bridge" is not only one of the peppiest tunes I've heard in a long time but it's great to hear a tune with a message of good moralities in it instead of all the other garbage messages we hear today!
I'm listening now and this show makes me think I'm in heaven. Wow-wow-wow!
Unbelieveably Great Music! - I listened to this last night and could not believe that there are so many beautiful songs that I have never heard before. In the past forty years since I was born I have never heard tunes that are as wonderful as the recordings Chuck Cecil played from 60 to 75 years ago -- and for old 78 RPM's they sound very stereophonic. They come across with high, high super high fidelity!
Now, do the math with me here. There's an average of about 15 songs per hour-long program that many of us have never heard before. Mr. Cecil said that he is playing from his personal library of over 30,000 classic 78 RPM records. OK, in one year of one-hour programs I could hear (15 x 52) = 780 of those 30,000 records. Wait a minute. What is 780 divided into 30,000. Oh, no! It will take me almost 40 years to hear all these records. And, are two-sided records? - or is he counting the other side in the 30,000? If not, that would be about 75 years or so to hear all of this most wonderful, happy, rhythmic music that is really music! Unless you add another hour or two a week, I'll never make it. That makes me sad. But, there's next week. I'm looking forward to next week when you have another show of this really great music. I have never heard anything like this before. Thank you! Thank you!
This was another great program and I really like the way your announcers are handling your new membership and renewal pitches - not overdone like some do - just right! And, I'm glad that you reminded me as you did that I need to renew mine. I plan to do that next.
People in Texas should really like this week's show. I enjoyed those different versions of "Deep In The Heart Of Texas." I didn't know that so many big names had sung this song - Bing Crosby, wooing version, very good; Alvino Rey and his orchestra, very good; and a very interesting version by Horace Heidt and his orchestra. And, the other songs were outstanding too. Of course, they were the top ten hits of the featured year as you said.
It was a really GREAT SHOW! I can hardly wait until you put out next week's show and I wish my local station would carry it! There are a lot of people hear in Washington who love the way you do this show!
I'm listening to your latest episode here on PRX. The incredible musical selections in this program just melts me. I don't know how it to say it.
This has taken away my breath. I have never heard some beautiful musical pieces anywhere like this before. Thank you for not only preserving this -- but for presenting it. Wow! I'm blown away. I've listened twice now and can't stop listening to these selections. And, yes. The information that Chuck Cecil gives is obviously well-researched (and even first hand from his experience). I think I will be now a Chuck Cecil fan forever.
Good going to PRX and PRWW!
You've made my day with this!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! -- and oh yes, Wow!
Five on you.
Thanks for including the Chuck Cecil Swingin' Years program on PRX. A friend just told me that you're carrying it and I'm listening to this week's February 1 countdown now as I write you.
This is great! I used to listen to Mr. Cecil when I lived in Pacific Palisades (Los Angeles area). He was on KFI then -- long time ago. It is one of the greatest shows I've ever heard anywhere and it seems to be even better now after more than 40 years! It's going into my favorites!
I hope that you'll let people know that he's on your network now. Mr. Cecil literally has millions of fans scattered throughout the US.
I'm sad to learn of the loss of our unofficial Ambassador of Hawaii. This program presented his a mini auto-biography that makes me feel that I now know Don Ho personally.
The host did an exceptional job of interfacing with the guest and asked just the questions I wanted to hear answered.
What could have been done better here? Maybe you could have made it two hours instead of one.

I have an appreciation for information related to health and natural healing and I work with youth and music so this mini report really caught my attention.
I like the way this report begins with some history very well researched on how music therapy has been used for thousands of years. The credibility of this report came to the fore as the reporter reminded listeners that King David used a harp for theraputic purposes (so effective that the evil King Saul was not only refreshed and made well but the evil spirit that that had been possessing him departed from him!). Hooray for good and uplifting music! And, wonderful that this report helps to encourage children in that regard.
The person interviewed was kind of boring and lifeless in his speaking (and maybe he should be edited out and somebody with more life found for the interview) but the reporter carried the rest of it so well that I would like to hear this kind of reporting to be aired nationally!
CPA says Exceptionally Well Done! I am a certified public accountant who worked for over 50 years preparing taxes year after year and I still keep an eye into this area somewhat.
This may come as a surprise but I learned one or two things from these reports that I had not been taught before. I listened to all five parts of the programme and I appreciated the insights on the 529 plans and the web site links for more information on that.
I must confess that I have never given to public radio before though I love public radio. This programme has persuaded me that I should give something each year to my public radio station. I plan to do just that because of wonderful programmes like this one and others I have heard here.
I would definitely like to hear more of this kind of feature because it is helpful to people especially at this time of year when people need to be reminded to take action before they loose out on some tax savings that are lost if not done before the end of the year at midnight. This show presented that very well.
It started out basic, yes, but that got my attention. And, frankly, there is nothing better for a quick bail-out than a charitable contribution at the end of the year. The man hit that right on the head and it was good that he started out the programme that way and then proceeded to the more meatier items later on in later editions of the programme as he did.
I wish he had said a little more than he did on it. He could have pointed out that sometimes it only takes a charitable contribution of a few hundred dollars to cause one to save a thousand dollars or more on their income taxes!
That is a point that could have been stressed a little more but I only offer that as a suggestion and know that the man had many others needs to consider with this kind of programme.
Not only did I want to see the additional tax tips on the web site that the host mentioned but my curiosity was intrigued by the favorite charity picks. I like very much the ones you have chosen there.
It was the inclusion there of support for public radio as one of the five charity picks that made me decide that time is overdue for me to write out a check to my local public radio station. I think I will also see my attorney first of the year and have a line added to my will to leave some of my assets to you great folks in public radio!
Keep up the good work! This show was the greatest!
