Rene Gutel is a reporter and host at KJZZ. She's been with the station since 2004. She covers a bit of everything: crime, business, immigration, politics, digital culture and all things quirky.

Rene is proof that there is life after dropping out of graduate school; In 2001, she left UC Berkeley, where she was studying Andalusian poetry, to move to the tundra of Alaska and report for KSKA and the Alaska Public Radio Network. Today, her award-winning features air on KJZZ during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. You can also hear her filling in for any of KJZZ's regular hosts.

Her work has appeared nationally on NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Day to Day, PRI's The World, Weekend America, the Voice of America and B-Side Radio. In 2007, she was a runner-up for the Associated Press of Arizona's "Reporter of the Year" prize. Rene has won journalism awards in Alaska, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and three regional Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.

In her spare time, she takes her two miniature dachshunds to the dog park. She's also a producer for the alt.NPR podcast, B-Side Radio.
