David Schulman is creator and producer of Musicians in their own words, a series of first-person portraits of musicians. Features in the series, which is supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, air nationally on NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered. A feature on Joseph Shabalala, co-produced with Jeffrey Freymann-Weyr, was awarded the Silver Award at the 2004 Third Coast International Audio Festival.
In March 2007, a new series of four thematic hour-long "Musicians in their own words" specials will be distributed by Public Radio International. The specials are hosted by Bonnie Grice, with program support from WLIU-FM, Southampton, New York. Performers featured in the specials will include Renee Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Poncho Sanchez, Cyro Baptista and many more.

Earlier stand-alone features in the series also have been created specifically for station use and distributed via PRX in partnership with WUNC, Chapel Hill, NC. The series won a PRX "Zeitfunk" award for WUNC in 2004, and reviewers called these pieces "beautifully constructed" and "the gold standard for non-hosted music and actuality pieces." To find these, search PRX pieces for "schulman" or visit WUNC's pieces page:

David also created and curates audioambush.org a project to bring engaging audio to audiences in movie theaters. From 2000-2002, David worked at NPR for Performance Today, and while there produced In Rehearsal, a web+radio project. Before breaking into audio, David worked as a reporter for a small but fiesty newspaper in North Carolina.
