About Me

David Schulman is creator and producer of Musicians in their own words, a series of first-person radio portraits. Featured performers include unsung heroes of American music as well as icons such as Renee Fleming, Poncho Sanchez, Yo-Yo Ma, and the late Bo Diddley.

Lately, he's also been producing "field commentaries" for Weekend America's "Conversations with America" series.

More than 35 Musicians in their own words features have aired nationally on the NPR newsmagazines. In 2006-07 David wrote, directed and mixed four hour-length Musicians in their own words specials distributed nationally by PRI.

David also curated a series of audio short subjects, audioambush, presented in surround sound at the American Film Institute's Silver Theatre. He recently produced a series of features on great books for the National Endowment for the Arts. Other work includes projects for American Public Media's The Story with Dick Gordon and Speaking of Faith.

David has twice been awarded grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. In 2004, he and NPR's Jeffrey Freymann-Weyr won the Silver Award at the Third Coast International Audio Festival for a piece on South African singer Joseph Shabalala.

Earlier stand-alone features in the Musicians in their own words series were created specifically for station use and distributed via PRX in partnership with WUNC. The series won a PRX "Zeitfunk" award for WUNC in 2004, and reviewers called these pieces "beautifully constructed" and "the gold standard for non-hosted music and actuality pieces."

Before breaking into radio, David worked as a reporter for the small but then feisty Chapel Hill News. These days he lives near the farmers' market in Takoma Park, MD, and is trying to find more time to practice latin & jazz violin.
