In October 2017, Texas Folklife worked with a group of students at Hogg Middle School in Houston, Texas. These are the finished stories - a diverse medley of pieces reflecting the communities of Houston.

Texas Folklife recently released three youth-produced radio documentaries as part of its media education program, Stories from Deep in the Heart. The stories cover a wide range of issues selected by students at Hogg Middle School, including school culinary arts, student electronic use, and a survivor’s story of life after Hurricane Harvey. These stories were premiered for the class on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.

Texas Folklife has been planning a radio education pilot program in Houston since 2016 as an expansion of its radio education classes in Austin. With the help of Linda Ho Peché, an independent scholar of folklore and oral history, Texas Folklife partnered with Hogg Middle School to offer an elective in podcast production. Students researched a podcast subject of their choice, performed fieldwork over the weekend, then wrote and recorded narration for the class during the second week. The podcasts were produced and finishing touches were added under the guidance of Stories director Brian Griffith.

About the Program:

“Stories from Deep in the Heart” is an award-winning in depth folklore and audio documentary training public high public school students, teachers, and community members across Texas. Participants create short, broadcast quality audio documentaries on the stories, folklore, arts and traditions of their families and communities. Participants are teachers and students from schools identified by Texas public school districts as undergoing critical population changes, schools with a high percentage of at-risk youth, and schools that have pressing need of cultural diversity training.

The “Stories from Deep in the Heart” Houston pilot project is supported in part through grants from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Texas Commission on the Arts and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art; and generous support from KPFT 90.1FM Pacifica and Hogg Middle School.
