For years, Iowa poet, musician, and media producer Dean Rathje has been searching for choice old ballads, full of humor and pathos, joy and tragedy, magic and transformation. Some of these ballads originate in old Europe, with the Child Ballads, others in America, in the enclaves of the Southeast and in points along the westward expansion. Rathje offers two hour-long programs, about 54 and a half minutes each, one with 12 songs and one with 11. Each ballad is prefaced by a short informative introduction over a folk music sound bed.
