Healing post-colonization malignant shame and trauma in Irish people worldwide because a family fairy story told me to.

How Irish Are You? is a unique confluence of tones and themes combining song, history, myth, narrative, folklore, personal testimony, linguistics, and catharsis.

The basic aim of the show is to heal centuries of the effects of trauma experienced by the Irish globally as a way to restore a sense of shared identity and culture. Hosted by Josh Cole, the Feelings Detective.

When Cole began researching his O'Keeffe (Ó Caoimh) family line he discovered a fairy story that suggested in fantastical terms that someone with no desire for "sordid gain" could perhaps restore missing love to the world.

How Irish Are You? was inspired by the formulations of the late Dr. Garrett O'Connor, former head of the Betty Ford Center, whose paper Recognising and Healing Malignant shame says:"Clinical experience with families suggests that a combination of psychological and spiritual recovery is an effective treatment for malignant shame, and also perhaps the only way to prevent it from being transmitted to the next generation. If malignant shame should prove to be a significant problem for Ireland at a national level, then a similar prescription will undoubtedly be required, but on a much larger scale."
