Shakespeare Moments: Globe to Globe

Series produced by 98.7 WFMT & the WFMT Radio Network

This spring Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London is embarking on a thoroughly modern, multi-cultural celebration, inviting 37 theater companies from every corner of the world to England, where each will present a different Shakespeare play, using their own cultural styles and language. This unprecedented global Shakespearean celebration is unlike anything that’s ever been attempted in the 400 years since Shakespeare’s plays were created.

Your radio audience can experience this adventurous, global project through a 4-week series of 2 ½ minute daily radio programs available starting May 7.

Peabody Award winning producer Steve Rowland (The Miles Davis Radio Project; Leonard Bernstein: An American Life) will deliver a taste of the excitement to your audience with a 2 ½ minute weekday broadcast, each of which focuses on a different Shakespeare play and the particular global theater company presenting it.

Each episode of Shakespeare Moments: Globe to Globe features brief interviews with artists about how Shakespeare and their cultural traditions intersect, as well as excerpts from performances and interviews with artists describing what Shakespeare means in different countries, and how theater brings people together everywhere.

The festival is a celebration of world languages and its message is “Shakespeare belongs to everyone.” It is sure to kindle new excitement in Shakespeare and push the envelope in many ways. To give just a few examples: the Festival will feature troupes from India, Mexico, Nigeria, South Sudan, Korea, Japan, Poland, China, Greece, Russia; a hip-hop version of Othello from the United States; the three parts of Henry VI performed by former nations from pre-civil war Yugoslavia; an Israeli production of The Merchant of Venice; a Persian Comedy of Errors; a Brazilian Romeo and Juliet; and a production of Love’s Labour’s Lost entirely in sign language.

Dominic Dromgoole has been the Artistic Director of the prestigious Shakespeare’s Globe theatre since 2006. The Globe to Globe festival is one of the most ambitious projects of his celebrated career.

Shakespeare Moment: Globe to Globe is produced and hosted by Steve Rowland. He has won nearly every major award in broadcasting including two Peabody Awards, The Prix Italia, The CPB, & The Ohio State Award and was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. His work is in the permanent collections of The Library of Congress and The Museum of Television and Radio. His work has been heard on over 700 radio stations in the US and on networks in Europe, Australia and South Africa.

He produced the 11-hour documentary Leonard Bernstein: An American Life, which is narrated by Susan Sarandon. It is based on over 100 exclusive interviews Rowland conducted with colleagues of Bernstein. He also directed the acclaimed 8-hour Miles Davis Radio Project, narrated by Danny Glover; the 5-hour documentary on John Coltrane, Tell Me How Long Trane’s Been Gone, narrated by poet Michael S. Harper, and individual documentaries on a number of American icons, including Carlos Santana: Music for Life, narrated by Edward James Olmos; Patti LaBelle: Gospel into Soul, narrated by Whoopi Goldberg; Frank Zappa: American Composer, narrated by Beverly D’Angelo, and Hip-Hop 101: On the Road with the Roots, narrated by Chuck D.

Steve Rowland is currently working on an 8-hour documentary series about Shakespeare in our time and how and why he continues to speak to us across continents and across centuries. Hide full description
