“Heaven and earth never agreed better to frame a place for man’s inhabitation.” Those are the words of Captain John Smith, remarking on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Some four hundred years later, the inhabitants of this remarkable strip of land readily agree with the good Captain.

The Eastern Shore is an extraordinary historical, geological and ecological gem, the lower part of the Delmarva Peninsula, bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the mighty Chesapeake Bay. At its widest, it is a mere 22 miles across, and it stretches south from Maryland some 70 miles. It offers a beautiful patchwork of farmland, forest and shoreline, with barrier islands stretching along the length of the ocean side, always changing yet always protecting the shore. This pastoral setting draws birders, sportsmen and tourists, all of whom discover something to their liking on this strip of land where life is slower and simpler.

The inhabitants of the Eastern Shore, the waterman and farmers who have worked the sea and land for centuries, have accumulated a wealth of stories and legends, and the history of the area is closely tied to the founding of this country, with tales of pirates, slaves and even Presidents.

WHRO-FM and WHRV, working with the Barrier Islands Center, will offer glimpses of the life, the land and the history of Virginia’s Eastern Shore through radio vignettes. Hide full description
