"8 records and 1 castaway"

When you put one castaway and eight records together in conversation, it’s hard to stop listening.

Each week people from all aspects of life are asked the question, if you were to be cast away alone on a desert island, which eight records would you choose to have with you, assuming of course, that you had a listening device and an inexhaustible power source.

Desert Island Discs gives the listener a unique entrée into the lives of "ordinary" people living their lives in "extraordinary" ways employing an engaging mixture of curiosity, intelligence and warmth.

"Desert Island Discs" is a weekly live radio program heard on WMPG FM (90.9/104.1) in Portland, Maine every Monday morning from 10:30am until 12:00pm EST and streaming at www.wmpg.org. The host and producer is Jeff Wax. The show follows the model of a very successful radio program that first aired in 1942 on BBC 4 Radio in England, which has become the second longest radio program, surpassed only by "The Grand Ole' Opry" and the longest factual running program in the history of radio. Each week people from all aspects of life are asked the question, if you were to be cast away alone on a desert island, which eight records would you choose to have with you, assuming of course, that you had a listening device and an inexhaustible power source. We hear excerpts from each of the castaways selections, - discussion of their choices permits a review of their life and listeners have the opportunity to meet a variety of interesting members of the community "up close and personal".
