SPACES is a multi-media documentary project bringing together audio interviews and photographic documents. The goal of the project is to create a direct and intimate connection between individuals and the city they live in, Cape Town.

PROCESS

Each participant will be asked to choose a space in Cape Town that holds some significance for them; they will then be interviewed and photographed in that space. Interviews will be focused on that space and its significance; sounds will also be collected from each space and integrated in the production phase. Certain consistent elements will be carried throughout all photographs; the approximate distance between subject and camera, lighting, etc.

An additional photographic element will turn each document into a diptych. Within the chosen space a photograph of the sky/ceiling and ground will be taken and merged. The semi-transparent quality of each image will reveal both ground and sky creating an abstract texture that will then be cropped into a square. Each abstract creation will have the title "A TILE FOR BUILDING. A PATCH FOR QUILTING #1" with every subsequent image numbered (#2, #3, #4, etc.). Each image of the participants will have their name, occupation / passion (what they do) and name of space attached.

CONCEPT
Cape Town is a city within a country and continent that increasingly, and especially in today’s globalized setting, receives negative publicity from an un-critical standpoint. Often, it is negativity for negativity’s sake with the voice of the journalist largely not acknowledged. An obsession with the principle of objective journalism can be a dangerous one, which does not acknowledge that one cannot evaporate all lived experience and therefore neither can you, to some degree, the subjective perspective. This dangerous liaison with the paramount goal of the objective piece has more often than not relegated this continent into an image of despair (a continent to be coddled) because how can the ‘objective’ facts lie. The submission of some facts in place of the omission of others is in and of itself subjective. The submission of some stories with the omission of others, once again, is subjective.

Through this project I hope to create an intimate portrayal of sections of a city through the voices of some who live here. It will be personal, un-sensational and far from detached. It will be a platform for critical and engaged voices. I hope that both the creative and analytical voice will find their story to tell in the SPACES amalgamation of audio and image.
