Patrick Schmidt's Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Constitutional Law Class at Macalester College was tasked with raising civic awareness on a constitutional issue.
We decided to make a radio show series examining the history of protest rights in the United States.

With the Supreme Court the final stop in the judicial process, what it says goes. It has defined what we understand today as free speech, taking it beyond mere speech to include expression, action, and protest. To get at the heart of our right to protest, we'll look at three stories of where we've been and where we're going.
The first episode is about the controversial case of Texas v. Johnson: is burning the American Flag protected under the First Amendment as protest.
The second episode is about the Vietnam era armband protest of Tinker v. Des Moines: do protest rights stop at the schoolhouse gate?
Finally, today, to the 2008 Republican National Convention in Saint Paul and the arrests of 8 protesters: were their speech rights infringed, and what does this say about the modern limits of protest?
