TEMPO was originally was formed in 2003 under the name, Welfare Radio Collaborative, as an innovative partnership between Women of Color Resource Center and the National Radio Project, an independent media production, distribution and training organization. Now called TEMPO, the project:

TEMPO was originally was formed in 2003 under the name, Welfare Radio Collaborative, as an innovative partnership between Women of Color Resource Center and the National Radio Project, an independent media production, distribution and training organization. Now called TEMPO, the project:
*Trains lo-income women in radio production skills.
*Produced and distributes radio documentaries and short segments and distributes radio documentaries and short segments about the social and economic justice issues that affect the lives of poor women.
*Develops the broad leadership skills of a team of low-income women so that they may become leaders, spokeswomen and advocates on the public policy issues that most impact them.

The women of TEMPO have mastered a wide range of skills: selecting and researching relevant topics; developing interview strategies and questions; conducting and recording interviews; conducting field recording; editing and finalizing script; hosting, voicing, reporting and narrating; and uploading audio to the web.
