Llegando de los Pueblos (Arriving from the Villages)
Series produced by Megan Martin
A short series of radio portraits of the people and organizations that pepper the small villages of Oaxaca, Mexico's migrant corridor.
The Mixteca Region is the heart of a migrant corridor that stretches from Guatemala, up to the border, overflowing into the working communities of the United States. Who are the people of the mountainous Mixteca Region? What do they care about? What compels them to take the journey north, or remain behind? And how has a small indigenous radio station managed to keep them connected through sounds, voices and a 5,000-watt signal?
This small series was assembled in fulfillment of a one-year Fulbright-García Robles fellowship. In collaboration with the Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indígenas (CDI)in Mexico, as well as the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social (CIESAS), these radio pieces were produced for broadcast by the XETLA station in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca.
