Standing Up To Hate in Europe

Series produced by Phillip Martin

Series image

A four-part series about Europeans who are organizing against hate groups and discrimination in Europe.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Europeans have seen a steady resurgence of neo-Nazi and anti-immigrant mass movements. While a great deal of attention has been focused on racist "skinheads", particularly in the eastern half of Germany, Sweden, and in Russia, far less attention has been paid to a loosely defined grass-roots, ANTI-racism Movement that has surfaced across the continent. They are working largely unseen to counter the proponents of hate. It is their story that I report in this four-part series titled "Standing Up To Hate in Europe". Some people interviewed for these reports compare their struggles to aspects of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement.

Part One: In the Spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. (a German activist describes how MLK influenced her life and her life-long struggle against right-wing extremism and anti-Semitism). 8 min. Phillip Martin, Reporter.

Part Two- Violence or Non-Violence: Reporting from Germany, Sweden and Norway, I look at what is happening on the ground and the arguments for and against violence. 8 min. Phillip Martin, Reporter.

Part Three - A snapshot of Roma (Gypsy) progress and ongoing obstacles. A report from the Czech Republic and Hungary. Comparisons to the U.S. Civil Rights Movement were inevitable and help inform the piece. 8 min. Phillip Martin, Reporter.

Part Four -Using the Internet and Music to counter hate-- From Germany, Norway and France. 8 min. Phillip Martin, Reporter.
