Literary Brooklyn

From Shannon Geis | 08:00

A conversation with the author of a new book about the literary history of Brooklyn.

Default-piece-image-0 Brooklyn has become known recently for it’s writing scene, having even been compared to 1920s Paris by The Huffington Post earlier this year. But maybe the literary history of the borough isn’t so new. That’s what Evan Hughes focuses on in his new book Literary Brooklyn: The Writers of Brooklyn and the Story of American City Life, which just came out in August.

In The New York Times review of the book, Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts says, “Urban history and literary history often brush up against each other to profound effect” in the book, but that “it is the inner terrain, rather than Brooklyn itself, that Hughes conquers with greatest force.”

We caught up with Hughes and talked to him about how he decided to write the book and what he discovered about Brooklyn’s best writers while working on the book.

Have you ever been curious about what it feels like to run a marathon but aren’t sure you are interested in finding out first hand? Check out “Endure,” a one-woman show opening in Prospect Park this weekend that takes you on an immersive journey through the thoughts of a marathon runner.

The BK Buzz went to an early performance of “Endure” this summer, which starts at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, winds its way through Prospect Park, and ends near the picnic house in the long meadow, and got a chance to talk to creator Melanie Jones, who has run four marathons, about her experiences running as inspiration for the show and how the immersive and experimental style of “Endure” allows the audience and the performer to challenge the traditional conventions of performance.

What would you to to help revitalize the dead space around and underneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway? Artist Ellie Balk, with the help of the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project and a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, decided to paint it. After nearly a year of preparation, Balk began painting under the BQE at Steuben Street in Clinton Hill in mid-September. She got her inspiration for the mural, called Soundwaves, after painting a piano for the Sing for Hope Pop Up Piano installation earlier this year. After weeks of painting with help from members of the community, the mural was finished and dedicated earlier this month.

After the dedication ceremony, The BK Buzz sat down with Ellie Balk and two of the pianists who contributed to the piece. Hear what they had to say.
