A Horse Named "Buckwheat"

From Rogi Riverstone | 04:30

What do you do when they tell you your child is in a persistive vegetative state, tell you to put her in a nursing home and go on with your life? You bring her home and put her on a horse.

Amanda_small When she was eight years old, Amanda was thrown from a truck. The driver was drunk, speeding and driving recklessly. He was Amanda’s soon-to-be ex-stepfather. He hadn’t put Amanda in her seatbelt. Amanda flew through the window of the truck, onto the street. Her skull shattered instantly. She survives severe brain damage as a result. When Brenda faces an obstacle to the quality of life of her children, she educates herself on the medical, legal and social aspects of the issue and challenges the institutions and authorities, charged with their care.

Brainstorm: An Experience of Brain Injury (58:00 / 53:00)

From Rogi Riverstone | 57:38

Produced by Rogi Riverstone, "Brainstorm" is a creative exploration of brain injury, through interviews with survivors.

Tneveryplaceinmyheart_small "Brainstorm" is an exploration of brain injury, through interviews with survivors. What diagnostic facilities, rehabilitation, support systems exist in for those who face recovery from brain injury? What are the social challenges: stigmatization, economic impact, contact with law enforcement, etc. "Brainstorm" is designed for the general community, as most of us have little experience, information and recognition of the challenges of brain injury. This story is of national significance. As thousands of military personnel begin returning from overseas wars, brain injury recovery will be an issue of immediate impact on the communities to which they will be returning. Are we prepared? Communities will be making serious decisions about the handling of survivors. Albuquerque is a microcosm of the national discussion.
