Eleanor Allen and Water for People: Ensuring the Waters Flow Forever

Water. We take it for granted, yet 2.1 billion people around the world don't have access to safe water and 4.5 billion lack access to adequate sanitation. In fact, there are still places on the planet where women and children spend more than four hours walking for water each day. It's estimated that by 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas.

Eleanor Allen is the CEO of Water for People and a world-leading water expert dedicated to helping billions of people access safe and sustainable water and sanitation services. An engineer and former Peace Corps volunteer, Eleanor has led large global and regional operations in consulting, project management, program management, business development.  Eleanor believes societal change can be accelerated through social entrepreneurship and the efforts of organizations like Water For People.  Watch her TEDx talk on "Why Water Is A Women’s Issue," in which she poignantly explains the intrinsic connection between women and one of Earth's most precious resources.

Nick Stuccio is the president and producing director of Fringe Arts. Nick’s career in the arts began with an intensive study of classical ballet at Skidmore College, where he also earned a degree in biology. His dedication to the form led to an apprenticeship with the Pennsylvania Ballet and eventually a position as a corps member with the company, where he danced for eight years. At the Ballet, Stuccio danced under the artistic direction of Ricky Weiss, Christopher d’Amboise and Roy Kaiser.

Stuccio retired as a dancer and began producing full-time in 1995.  He co-founded the Philadelphia Fringe Festival (now FringeArts) which has since grown into the year-round contemporary performance presenter FringeArts. The organization seeks to expose audiences to genre-defying dance, theater, and music performances by accomplished and emerging innovators who push the boundaries of art-making and redefine the artistic landscape worldwide.

Also in 1997 he was named “Person of the Year” by Philadelphia Weekly. He was included in Philadelphia Magazine’s 2000 edition of “People to Watch,” as well as Philadelphia Magazine’s 2009 and 2014 “Power Issue” and The 100 Most Influential People (2017).  His many production credits include co-founding Shut Up and Dance, the popular annual benefit that showcases work choreographed and performed by dancers of the Pennsylvania Ballet and raises more than $100,000 net every year to benefit the Metropolitan Aids Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance (MANNA).

Madeline Bell is the president and CEO of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), one of the top-ranked children’s hospitals in the United States. Madeline began her career as a pediatric nurse at CHOP in 1983, later leaving the organization to move into hospital administration. She returned to CHOP in 1995, and has since held a number of leadership positions, advancing from Vice President to Senior Vice President to Executive Vice President to Chief Operating Officer. In 2015, she assumed the title of President and CEO.
A graduate of Villanova University and the University of Pennsylvania, Madeline is a sought-after speaker on healthcare, leadership, child advocacy and other topics. She is the Chair of the Children’s Hospital Association and also serves on the boards of Comcast, the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, and Solutions for Patient Safety. In 2017 and again in 2018, she was named one of Modern Healthcare’s “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.”

Ellen Hwang, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation: Reimagining Public Spaces

In Philadelphia, Knight Foundation focuses on the power of public spaces to unite and strengthen the city. In partnership with the city and other funders, they piloted Reimagining the Civic Commons, an initiative to connect and reinvigorate public spaces such as parks, trails, recreation centers and libraries. Their goal is to bring together people from all backgrounds, develop new local leaders and foster a more vibrant, engaged community.

Knight Foundation is a national foundation with strong local roots. They invest in journalism, in the arts, and in the success of cities where brothers John S. and James L. Knight once published newspapers. Their goal is to foster informed and engaged communities, which they believe are essential for a healthy democracy.

In Philadelphia, Knight Foundation focuses on the power of public spaces to unite and strengthen the city. Ellen Hwang joined Knight Foundation in April 2019. Previously, Hwang served the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Innovation and Technology, where she oversaw the creation of SmartCityPHL, the city’s first roadmap to guide the use of technology in serving the community and improving government services.
