Bullying Culture in Boyle Heights

From Sara Harris | 07:50

Oscar Rodriguez and René Ayala look at how the subtlest forms of bullying serve as cultural cues for peer intervention in a majority-Latino high school in Los Angeles.

Img_4227_small Oscar Rodriguez and René Ayala are student leaders and activists at Roosevelt High School's communication school on the eastside of Los Angeles. As they set out on what seems to be a simple task-- to define what bullying is at their school-- they realize that little common ground exists, but a lot of common sense and empathy take them a long way. In the face of statewide budget cuts, students rely on their own cultural sensitivities to address bullying when counseling services fall by the wayside. This story features an interview with one the hardest-working staffers at the Los Angeles Unified School District-- bullying prevention and invervention specialist-- Holly Priebe Díaz.
