Turnstyle in 140 Seconds: Indie Game Designer Borut Pfeifer
From TurnStyle | Part of the Turnstyle in 140 Seconds series | 02:20
Turnstyle talked with indie game designer Borut Pfeifer of Haunted Temple Studios about their new game-- Skulls of the Shogun-- which is winning all kinds of awards and what being an indie developer means to him.
Haunted Temple Studio’s Skulls of the Shogunhas been turning heads at video game conferences and shows all year long. The team calls it an “arcade strategy game”, which sounds like a contradiction in terms. Co-developer Borut Pfeifer says that the idea is to take the “depth of strategy games but bring ‘em to a broader audience, and make it feel like an arcade game where you can just jump in.”
We spoke with Pfeifer about the game, the studio’s multi-city (and country) structure, and his earliest gaming memories in our latest episode of Turnstyle in 140 Seconds.
Hell and Back Again's Unique Sound Design
From TurnStyle | 03:17
Danfung Dennis worked for several years as a war photographer in Iraq and Afghanistan. In time he came to feel that still photos didn’t portray what he was seeing and hearing on the ground. The romantic image of war he had grown up with from video games and movies was not what he was finding while embedded with Marines in the field.
“There isn’t an orchestra playing when you’re running through a battlefield,” says Dennis. “There isn’t you know, huge drums. It’s just pure terror.”

It takes something special to get a 300 person strong audience of industry pros and talent to sing along with the theme to a kid’s TV show. Especially one they didn’t grow up with.
That something special is Googy, one of the star attractions this year at Channel 101, the monthly “micro TV” screening series in Los Angeles.
Check out Turnstyle’s interview with the creative team, co-creators Willy Roberts and Mike Manasewitsch and writer/producer Brenan Campbell, and behind the scenes photos from the latest episode.

LA’s Secret Headquarters
From TurnStyle | Part of the The Funnybook Business series | 04:31
I’d heard of Silver Lake’s Secret Headquarters long before I’d ever set foot in the shop. A friend had described it as a “victorian drawing room filled with comics”. Which pretty much captures the look Pifer and his business partner-- David Ritchie-- created for their store.
