The Mikie Show #2 Bunny and Boe

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:00

Holy cow they ordered another show. Our first adventure: let's learn about gardening in the desert! Very different. Our friends Meanie the Clown and his sidekick Shocko stop by along with a cameo from The Hi There's. A quiz I know you'll guess, plus a new feature—the sound play, ooh I like it.

Cactus_small We take an adventure into the high Sonoran Desert to see what gardening in such a place is like. Bunny and Boe are very charming people and fill us in on water harvesting, predator awareness and more. The usual cast of characters stop by. PLus, don't forget tyhe sound quiz. The sound play is introduced in this episode: a short story told using only music and sound—listeners decide the plot.

The Mikie Show #7 John

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:02

Find out what life is like in the orchestra pit on Broadway. John Moses, veteran of twenty-six shows gives us the inside story and also shares the joys of a musician's life. What's this, a new character arrives? Yes, we have a new friend on The Mikie Show, Claude. As usual, there's a whole lot more!

Broadway_small Virtuoso clarinetist John Moses muses about playing in the orchestra pit Broadway—he's played in the pit for most of the giant hits on the Great White Way and a couple of flops as well. Plus a charming outlook on the life of a career musician. Join us for that and our usual cast of unusual and funny characters on The Mikie Show! Yay!

The Mikie Show #8 Tom

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:00

Our guest is one of the greats in sound, Tom Clack. We talk about early days at BBC, MTV and traveling the world to record sounds. He performs the sound play in this episode, so you won't want to miss that. Meanie the Clown drops by, there's a sound quiz and Mikie tries some field recording of his own!

Meerkat_small We begin another fun-filled adventure. Thanks to Tom Clack, The Mikie Show is now being used as a teaching aid at SUNY Oneonta in New York. From the early radio days at the BBC to studios in New York City, Tom Clack shares the highlights of his career behind the scenes in television and radio programs and advertisements we all know. He has also travelled the world collecting sounds and is kind enough to use some from his private collection to perform our sound play this episode. Plus, Mikie himself goes out to record the sounds of insects in the wild. Ever wonder what it would be like to be the guy picking the prizes for a game show? Mikie does, too!

The Mikie Show #9 Joseph

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:02

We interview Joseph Benevidez. He does something I’ve always dreamed about doing but you’ll have to listen to find out, it’s better that way. Plus, Tom the Scot stops in to tell us a riddle. There’s some news and more. A note about the sound play in this episode. Listen carefully to the music at the end. Hmm, that’s the same music used in Episode Three’s sound play. Yes, this is the next chapter of the story we started in Episode Three. She’s made her way to the desert but is still being followed, I think. Or is she doing the following now?

Truck_small We take a trip up to the Acerco open pit copper mine and speak with one of their drivers, Joseph Benevidez. We discuss the life of a miner but also get to sit in and record (wasn't possible to ride in one) the sounds of those huge mining dump trucks used today. They can carry the equivalent weight of a 747 jumbo jet with each load. Plus they stand between 20 and 32 feet tall, depending on the truck's load rating (240 tons or 400 tons). Also, the usual characters and features round out another shining episode of The Mikie Show!. Yay!

The Mikie Show #10, Scott

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:02

Yippee, our tenth anniversary! Well, really just our tenth show, but still, nice to be here. We interview Alternative Rock producer Scott Litt. One of the greats, he's produced and/or mixed so many songs you all know. The short list would be Nirvana, R.E.M., Indigo Girls, Paul Kelly, The db's…What a blast. Also our friend Señor Glow stops by to help celebrate along with The Hi There's! There's more!

Scott_power_station_small We speak with Alternative Rock legendary producer Scott Litt. A little shop talk, advise to new bands and remembering making records with Nirvana, R.E.M. and others. Plus, the rest of our "crew" is on hand for our big tenth anniversary show! OK, it's just our tenth show, not tenth anniversary, but it's a cause to celebrate nonetheless.

The Mikie Show #13, Sharon

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 27:57

Who says 13 is unlucky? We’ve made it this far and are so thankful to have done so! For thirteen, we travel to just north of Tucson, AZ to interview Sharon Holnback. She owns and operates the historic Triangle L Ranch, a B&B/Art Gallery/Performance Space. Built as a cattle ranch in the 1890’s, it’s original buildings have all survived, including the bunk house, the foreman’s house and of course, the main house. Plus, the bloody thing is haunted (in spots) with friendly ghosts, ah, well, at least according to some guests. Press the little play arrow to find out all about it. Plus, you’ll get to hear from Tom the Scot, The Hi There’s and so much more! Plus, there's a lot of plus's in this description!

The Mikie Show # 19, Marcia

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:01

Join us for a conversation with Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Marcia Daniel. We talk about a day in the life and how anyone can beat a parking ticket—just kidding, but seriously, it's like on Law & Order but for reals. There’s also some news from way back when in time, a quiz and I think the Hi There’s make an appearance. Plus, we visit a Post Office, sort of. Why not join us for 28 minutes of all natural radio entertainment!

Hooray episode twenty-two has arrived at your computation machine’s receiving area! I think it’s a good show, I hope you like it. We speak with studio musician, arranger, songwriter, pianist Ken Ascher. He’s one of the greats. Join us for a fascinating discussion with anthropologist Dr. Ellen Basso. She has spent many years living with, studying and writing about the Kalapalo people of central Brazil. Deep in the Amazon. Coolness. Our main focus is their language and how it helps us understand their culture. Especially interesting is their story telling tradition. I've posted an excerpt from one of Ellen's recordings here.  There's also a visit from Claude, poor thing. It seems he's lost his, well, you'll see. There's news, a quiz and so much more, I had to take a nap afterward!

The Mikie Show #30, Charla

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:03

Episode thirty, holy mackerel! Thirty is a lot if you’re counting episodes (not so much when counting bacteria but we’re not counting bacteria today). Why not join the celebration with me and my guest school superintendent Charla Argo-Wright. She is wonderful and has really interesting ideas about education. Plus, she implements those ideas in Hoonah, Alaska an island community of just over 800 mostly native people. This place is only reachable by boat or plane. And our friend, well, should I tell? No, he said, why ruin the surprise, but we do have an unannounced guest and find a little red box and there’s a quiz and some news and a sound play and I’m going for the record of the most “ands” in a sentence! I think it’s a good show, I hope you like it!

Join us as we speak with independent filmmaker Martin Holt. Over forty-six years of collecting life's experience on film, he has filmed ceramic artists at work, rock bands (like the Doors and The Byrds), Andy Warhol, and anything else that caught his eye. We also have a visit from, okay I'm not telling, there's news, a sound quiz and I visit the new café in town. That's a lineup no sane person can resist, so come on, your sane, right? I thought so!

The Mikie Show #37, Abe

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:03

Join us as we speak with fabulous violinist Abe Appleman. Besides a love of chamber music, his main gig is playing with the first fiddles in the Orchestra of The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. And he’s done that for the last thirty years! We talk about the joy of a musician’s life. And he agreed to play a little for us, and, even though it’s over a funky phone connection, it was worth it! Also, our old friend, um, do you really want me to tell? Nah, it’s better to be surprised. There’s a little news, of course, and how about this for a feature, a sound quiz! There’s so much more, I can’t bring myself to type it. Why is that? Remember, The Mikie Show absorbs quickly and is completely gluten free!

The Mikie Show #39, Whit

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:03

Episode thirty-nine! Just had to say it, hope you don’t mind. We speak with Whit Patten, a man who grew up on a farm in the country (he had to board in town to attend high school) but went on to travel the world doing top secret work for the US in the cold war. Specifically, monitoring Soviet nuclear testing in the Arctic and Pacific. And then there’s the U-2 Flights and NASA, such a guy! There’s more: we have a couple of old friends stop by, you know the ones I’m talking about, they come by every now and then and do funny things. I can’t recall their names just now, however. You’ll have to listen to find out who! And we have a quiz and some news and just about everything you’d ever want in a radio variety show, including crisp, clean, fresh breath!

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:03

Episode forty-two welcomes back our friend, psychotherapist Glenn Berger, PhD. This is his fourth visit with us and as always it’s great to have him back. This time we discuss ADD, the difficulty of taking action and other topics of the psyche. And now I get that free session!
Plus, we get visited by a, okay, I’m not telling, you’ll have to listen to find out. And there’s news and a quiz and a remarkable soufflé recipe! Nope, the recipe thing is not true, but everything else is!

The Mikie Show #46, Wake

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:02

It’s episode forty-six! Fresh on the heels of episode forty-five. Maybe not so fresh, it’s been a while, but what matters is, you’re here!
Yes, this episode we speak with Wake Wheeler, a Shamanic practitioner. He practices and teaches the traditions of the Q’ero, indigenous people of Peru. Truly a gentle soul. And I was surprised to find out how important textiles are to their beliefs and traditions.
There’s more things: We’re going to have a quiz (bet you never guessed that), and some news, and Mikie gets stuck under an underpass, who knows what can happen under an underpass… I see another guest drops by, but they’re not yet quite in focus. If you click the play arrow, though, everything will become clear, so go ahead, see for yourself!

The Mikie Show #47, Kara

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:02

It’s another episode of The Mikie Show! I know, we were all hoping I’d say that. Well, I did. Join us as we speak with Kara Hartzler, an attorney whose focus is immigration and refugee law. We talk about what’s right and wrong for all sides. And she’s a playwright as well, whose plays have been performed across the country.
We have other features, too: There’s a quiz! How often does one get to do that without even asking! Plus there’s news that only we seem to be able to find, and perhaps an unexpected guest. He or she remains in the shadows for now, I guess you’ll have to listen to see them.
And Mikie gets a phone call! How riveting, a phone call! Okay, that’s not that riveting but it could be a little welding-like!
What the heck am I talking about!
Try clicking the play arrow and help me find out!

The Mikie Show #48, George

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:03

Here it is, another new show! This time we speak with George Bradley. He is a master of herpetology, meaning he collects, manages, identifies and pretty much loves everything about reptiles and amphibians. And he gets paid for the love by the University of Arizona Museum of Natural History. Plus, we got to go down to his space to have a talk and look at his many, many critters. There’s also a quiz, nothing about herpetology, just a general one-question quiz. And we have news about things you may think should never be news! How does that work? We’ll see. And there’s always an unexpected guest or two dropping by. So why not hop on down to the play arrow and shed that old skin for some fresh entertainment!

If you click the little play arrow down there you’ll be able to join us as we speak with Sheril Kirshenbaum, author and science writer. Besides being Director of The University of Texas at Austin’s Project on Energy Communication, she has written or co-written three books about science, has given a TED talk and is a science advisor to NPR’s Science Fridays program. I asked her how to boil an egg.
Just kidding. We talk about the future of energy and women in science, many things. Plus, a few more guests come by, but they asked that I don’t reveal their names at this time. And there’s a quiz and some news, all the things you need to know if you know what to need!
A translation of that previous sentence would be appreciated.

The Mikie Show #50, Joe

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:01

We return with episode fifty! Yes, your fiftieth show cocktail celebration can start right now! Let’s hope it also includes listening to the show!
It’s a good one, featuring an interview with Major Joe Da Silva, US Army. He’s done three tours in Iraq and was also in Afghanistan. Just having completed his Masters, he’s on his way back to West Point to teach (he is a West Point grad, class of 2002). We talk about the challenges of commanding, leadership and the soldiers he’s had the pleasure to serve with. There’s also another guest coming by, but I lost the thing with his name on it, where did I put that… No matter, I’m sure he’ll show up named or not. Plus there’s a quiz and some news you’ll never find anywhere else! Why exclaim that? Because it’s news you’ll never find anywhere else! All that and more awaits you behind the little play arrow. Wait, do I hear ice clinking in a cocktail glass? I heart you!

The Mikie Show #53, Lisa

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:01

This episode we speak with scholar, Lisa Castillo, PhD. Her interest is Afro-Brazilian culture. More specifically, the African diaspora of Brazil. It’s similar to the history of slavery here but there are significant differences, especially in how the original African culture and traditions of the slaves’ native land is still represented in Brazil today. She lives in Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil which is a very cool place, home to Candomblé and lots of Samba-ing. There’s other stuff, too: an unexpected guest arrives via the kitchen, we have a sound quiz, there’s news and Mikie attends an art opening! And that’s just the half of it! Okay, no, that’s more than half, more like three quarters, but if you click that little play arrow, that final quarter will be worth every penny!

And we get to travel down to their playhouse and talk whilst mingling with their beautiful, funny and sometimes bizarre puppets. There’s more: we repeat all the things you’re used to hearing! We’re all the way up to episode fifty-six and it’s a good one: we speak with Jane Eppinga, writer and author and charming interviewee. Most of her books are about history; my favorite: women geographers! No joke, I love geography. Plus we discuss her book of ghost stories and La Malinche, her book about the lover of Cortez. The Mikie Show #58, Carolyn

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:02

Woo boy another big show comes your way! This time we speak with historian, curator, author and lecturer, Carolyn O’Bagy Davis.
