Virtuoso clarinetist John Moses muses about playing in the orchestra pit Broadway—he's played in the pit for most of the giant hits on the Great White Way and a couple of flops as well. We take a trip up to the Acerco open pit copper mine and speak with one of their drivers, Joseph Benevidez. We discuss the life of a miner but also get to sit in and record (wasn't possible to ride in one) the sounds of those huge mining dump trucks used today. They can carry the equivalent weight of a 747 jumbo jet with each load. Plus they stand between 20 and 32 feet tall, depending on the truck's load rating (240 tons or 400 tons). Who says 13 is unlucky? We’ve made it this far and are so thankful to have done so! For thirteen, we travel to just north of Tucson, AZ to interview Sharon Holnback. She owns and operates the historic Triangle L Ranch, a B&B/Art Gallery/Performance Space. Built as a cattle ranch in the 1890’s, it’s original buildings have all survived, including the bunk house, the foreman’s house and of course, the main house. Specifically, monitoring Soviet nuclear testing in the Arctic and Pacific. And then there’s the U-2 Flights and NASA, such a guy! There’s more: we have a couple of old friends stop by, you know the ones I’m talking about, they come by every now and then and do funny things. I can’t recall their names just now, however. Credited with virtually singlehandedly raising the art of quilting to archaeological, historical and academic status, she has written twelve books, many of which are about quilting and the amazing women who made them. She specializes in Hopi quilts, but has also recounted the lives of other fascinating quilt makers in American history.
