In 2002, producer Britta Gordon met a group of retired longshoremen who had worked together on the waterfront in Portland, Oregon from the late 1950’s through the ‘70’s. She liked their storytelling and camaraderie and began sitting in on and recording their Friday morning coffee sessions. Over the course of several years, she interviewed these and other longshoremen, talking to them about their lives, how they had come to be on the waterfront, and how they felt about the work then and now.
The result of these conversations and interviews is an hour-long audio documentary in six segments that focus on some recurring themes: waterfront conditions, working relationships, family histories, the changes wrought by mechanization, money, class, and how they came to work on the waterfront. The piece is not simply oral history—although oral histories are certainly part of the mix—rather it blends conversation, commentary and interviews to present not only reminiscences, but a consideration of how these men see their present with a view to the past.

Episode 5 Taking Pains
Air-strikes and NATO attacks add pressure to Tariq's family in Khandahar. Alejandro has talked to his co-workers in New York about Lily stealing his ideas,. Romance buds has sprouted in the most unusual rocky ground. In Episode 5 Thayne has decided to go off-the-gird leaving his gadgets, social networking tools and communication in order to find a path in the meaning of life. But this journey is far from effortless, as the aliens learn change, promotion and concrete decisions take pains.

Centered around the expat couple, Lily and Tariq. Lily, a 29-year-old marketing executive, whose mother is African-American and whose father is Caucasian of German decent, has a problem identifying with her mother's heritage and tries to stay away from controversial topics. Tariq, an early thirty-something artist, whose family is from Afghanistan, wishes Lily would embrace her African-American heritage and is unnerved by Lily's pressure to get married. As the plot unfolds the domino effect of choices and events effect the rest of the "alien" characters including the "Humanitarian" Noach, a Dutch aid worker in Afghanistan; Alejandro, "the immigrant" from Mexico living in New York City; Thayne, a British "drifter" traveling in Costa Rica; Dingane, the South African "government worker"; and Dingane's sister Thandiwe, a Columbia University medical student.
