Jim Lauderdale: In his own words

From David Schulman | 00:03:25
Producers: David Schulman

 Credit:
An eclectic country musician describes how he sent Ralph Stanley to the Dairy Queen, and a few other tricks of a songwriter's trade.

Jim Lauderdale's country songs have been covered by the likes of George Jones, Patty Loveless and George Strait. He's been one of Lucinda Williams' favorite harmony singers. He's even won a Grammy -- for Lost in the Lonesome Pines, a 2002 record with bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley.

But, somehow, Lauderdale continues to snatch anonymity from the jaws of fame. In this feature, he offers his own droll theory why, and describes what it was like to collaborate with two very different groups - Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys and the jam band Donna the Buffalo.

As in all the pieces in David Schulman's CPB-supported Musicians in their own words series, the story is told through a mix of the performer's voice and music. There is no reporter's voice heard, allowing the feature to be seamlessly incorporated into station news, talk, or music programming.

Scripts for intro and outro are attached, and may be edited at will.

This feature works especially well when pegged to local performances.

This piece debuts on PRX.
