RN Documentary: Indian Courtesans
Series: RN Documentaries
From: Radio Netherlands Worldwide
Length: 00:29:30
Indian vocal music developed centuries ago and its traditional custodians were the baijis or the courtesans ? women who sang and danced for wealthy men and seduced them solely by the power of their music. When the British came to India, Victorian prudery wiped out the baiji tradition, but the music lives on.
