RN Documentary: The Free Radio Complex
From: Radio Netherlands Worldwide
Series: RN Documentaries
Length: 29:29
During the cold war, Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty played a crucial role in the struggle against communism. With the collapse of the iron curtain, they needed a new purpose. This became clear in 2001. After the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington, they were mobilized to support the United States? war on terrorism. Broadcasting is the most noticeable in America?s most extensive campaign ever to win the hearts and minds of Muslims.
If cold war broadcasts were dominated by politics, religion has become one of the main topics of discussion.
Now, more than half the 28 language services managed by Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty broadcast to parts of the world that are predominantly Muslim. Their aim is to give a voice to moderate Muslims, and none to extremists.
