Downy brome. June grass. Mormon oats. Cheatgrass. These are a few of the nice names for one of the West?s most troublesome weeds.
Cheatgrass, or Bromus tectorum to scientists, came to the United States by way of Eurasia. It was first introduced to this country in the 1800s, probably by accident. Spread by animals and people, in one short century this grass has colonized millions of acres. In recent years it?s become widespread on the Colorado Plateau.
