The All-City Marching Band is a music program in the greater Seattle area. Since 1961 they have performed at over 20 parades during the Seattle summer. Marcus Pimpleton directs All-City. He’s been with the band for 21 years. He started when he was only 13 years old. Throughout his life, band has always been there for him. IT’S A GORGEOUS SEATTLE SUMMER EVENING. THE SUN IS SETTING ACROSS PUGET SOUND. OVER 150 YOUNG MUSICIANS SIT IN MEMORIAL STADIUM. THEY’RE REHEARSING THE MARCH SONG “NATIONAL EMBLEM”. MARCUS PIMPLETON IS CONDUCTING THE BAND. HE HAS A PARTICULAR WAY THAT HE WANTS THE SONG TO SOUND.
CUT TO MARCUS REHARSING SONG
MARCUS EXPLAINS THAT HE WANTS THIS PART OF THE MARCH TO START LOUD, AND QUICKLY FADE AS THE REST OF THE NOTES ARE PLAYED. WHAT IN MUSIC IS CALLED A “DECRESCENDO”. TO GIVE AN EXAMPLE, HE EXPLAINS THAT HE WANTS IT TO SOUND LIKE WHEN YOU’RE ABOUT TO YELL AT YOUR PARENTS.

UP VOLUME IN MARCUS “YELLING”

YOU ALMOST YELL SOMETHING AND QUICKLY REALIZE THAT YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN’T BE SAYING SOMETHING LIKE TO YOUR PARENTS, SO YOU MUMBLE IT AWAY.
