A recent discovery of Smithville newspapers from the turn of the last century has led to a new online local history collection, The Smithville News: 1897–1915. The Monroe County Public Library partnered with Indiana University Libraries, the Monroe County History Center, and the Smithville Area Association, on the digital history project. The collection of newspapers and photographs shows how Smithville thrived with the early limestone and railroading industries, and tells us more about the families and businesses that defined an era. On July 19th , as part of the third Thursday lecture series at the Monroe County History center, Christine Friesel from MCPL’s Indiana Room gave a detailed look at papers, and what they have to tell us about area history.
